Find a place to get Pie

I've done a little research on pies.

I called the places below, but didn't find anyone who said, "Pies! I love to bake pies. That's what I do the best." But they were all nice and friendly. And some said they do make pies. Many of them suggested tarts instead of pies because they are less messy for guests, plus they are easier to make and the baker can make them look quite fancy. About timing - most needed lead time to bake the pies for the taste testing, and many are starting to get booked for September so the sooner you decide, the better. Here is who I called...

• She said pies are the one thing that she doesn't like to make because her crust always falls apart so the pie doesn't look nice. I said that means the crusts are probably delicious. But she felt uncomfortable selling a product that didn't look good.

• She said she could make sample pies, but not June 1 thru 8. She could make one on May 31, if you are coming June 1.

• He said he has apple pie and pecan pie on hand always, and we could come in for a free taste test. But he can bake a pie of another flavor (with 24 hour notice), and we pay for it.

• Talked to Jane. No pies, just tarts. Cocktail size $2.25, and 4.5" for $3.75, and 10" for around $35. Photos on website make it look pretty fancy. They use only butter and country eggs.

• They do a lot of catering in Lexington. They have pecan pie on hand. They can bake a pie of another flavor (with a weeks notice).

We can talk more about this. In the meantime, check out their websites, and give them a call if you want. And probably there are other places to check. I didn't even look in Roanoke.

Aaron is a bit of a foodie, so I asked him if he knew of any great pie bakeries in Charlottesville, since they seem to be hard to find in Lexington. He said he knew the best pie baker around - his girlfriend, Molly, and he would ask her if she would want to bake pies for the wedding. I said, no that would be too much, we would need a dozen pies. He said she likes a project. So he will ask her and let me know if she's interested. If she is, I told him we would want to do a pie tasting while you were visiting. If she is, we can ask her about the pie in a jar idea. Pie hunting is fun!
