variables w/metavalue (e.g. [UNK]) crash API constraint testing. Only seen as yet on "numeric" variables (all responses are strings in the database, whether constrained to numeric representation or not). This gives an API callstack dump.

Possibly related to #3? At the very least both of these involve metavalue handling.
