boot2 installation #19

So people can do a complete update entirely through homebrew, pretty much.

This would be an enhancement request, however.

So question is, why would you want to update to boot2 v4? From my understanding
there
is no added benefit to going to v4 and once you have v4 install it prevents
running
some older IOSes. Also once you upgrade to the latest boot2 you cannot
downgrade. So
if you really want this then we will consider it but I really don't think you
will
have any added benefit on upgrading.

there is one reason i can think of to add this feature.

if you upgraded to 4.2, and did it manually through wads off of NUS Downloader,
or any
other method, and leaving boot2(cuz bootmii in there makes it unbrickable) new
games
still update (like NSMB) to the new boot2. and from my understanding when you
install
bootmii over the new boot2 it doesn't ask to update.

@Lunatik: boot2v4 is functionally no different from any other version of boot2.
You
still could run ancient crap like IOS12 v6 if you wanted to.

This is for people who:
1. Try to update entirely through Dop-IOS MOD and get confused and scared when
they
see NSMBWii or other new games ask for an update.
2. Want to reinstall BootMii before they do the 4.2 update and not have the 4.2
update erase it, pretty much what hatredg0d said.

I would like this feature too.
Couldn´t we use the ´proper´ boo2-update code by the Twizzlers?

Sounds like a few people want it so I'll add it to the list.

We can't actually use the Twiizers code, as it isn't open.

Maybe the first implementation could use ES_ImportBoot and later versions could
use
custom code first and then ES_ImportBoot as a fallback.

Even then I still need to do some thorough research. One thing I don't want to
do is
potentially mess up the boot install process and completely brick the wii. I
also
want to do some checks and balances to make sure not only that I'm doing it
properly
but also I don't want to wipe out those who have bootmii installed. Like I said
I
have it on the list but it may take some time.

This is just an FYI Only. I talked with Team Twiizers and just some notes on
this
matter.

1. Whenever I run ES_ImportBoot to upgrade the boot2, It WILL wipe out BootMii.
There
is no way around this. You will have to rerun banner bomb and have to reinstall
BootMii. I will of course have a note about this in the screen prompts.
2. Once you update your Boot2 you cannot offically downgrade unless you have a
backup
copy of your nand with an older boot2.

Maybe have it as a separate app? I would feel that DOP-IOS is no longer as
safe if
this feature is added.

Original comment by lpq...@gmail.com on 26 Jan 2010 at 10:59

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Why would a separate app matter? The upgrade of boot2 would be done exactly the
same
way no matter which app it is ran from. The comments I made above applies no
matter
what per Team Twiizers.

@11: I knew the first one, I did not know the second.

By that, do you mean that it will refuse to boot older IOSes or system menus?
As in,
I couldn't go back to 2.0U if I wanted to?

The reason you cannot downgrade the boot2 easily is because ES_ImportBoot will
block
it due to the version numbers. It'll allow you to upgrade but not downgrade. So
that
only way to get an older version back onto the Wii is by directly flashing the
NAND.
And the only "safe" way to do that is via BootMii Backup/Restore.

You can run some older sysmenu versions. I'm not sure if it blocks them all but
I
have tested down to v3.2 so far and it seems to be working. I also tried
downgrading
to 2.0 just a little while ago, but I'm having problems with the content
hashes. I
think nintendo may have modified the TMD, but not 100% just yet. I'll keep
testing
though.

I know :P
But being the paranoid, pessimistic person I am, I want
some security that nothing will go horribly, horribly
wrong, so I'm a little touchy when it comes to boot2 :P

I hear ya. Well to put your mind at ease. I'm working directly with Members of
Team
Twiizers on the boot2 stuff and they know the boot2 stuff better than anyone
else ;)

@flameshadow: Good news. Boot2v4 does not block the 2.X.

Available in v12 Beta. http://code.google.com/p/dop-iosmod/downloads/list.

I have tested this on my own Wii multiple times and it seems to work for me.
