Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Play Commander Keen 4 with Sound Blaster on both music and sound.
2.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected: Sound when entering a level or doing things like jumping, item
grabbing, etc.
Got: No sound.

Does the issue occur on the latest DOSBox for Windows?
No.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Wii 3.3U DOSBox 0.72.01

Please provide any additional information below.
Ive been beta testing emulators for a few people for a few different
emulators such as WiiApple, Hatari Wii, Frodo Wii, and UAE Wii. I have
noticed that DOSBox Wii has a few problems such as crashing at random
times, the Conf file not being created correctly (fixed by using my PC
version's Conf file), and VGA problems. Today (5-15-09), I download from
WiiBrew the version of DOSBox Wii mentioned above. I ran Commander Keen 4
for testing purposes. After making sure the games settings are correct, I
started a game and went to the first level. I heard no sound. Same for when
jumping, grabbing items, etc. I know that versions of DOSBox Wii that I got
from GBATemp before today had almost perfect sound so this is a new problem.

This is a known problem, particularly with Commander Keen 4. It was working
better
before, but Tantric made some changes in the hopes of improving stability,
which
stopped Keen 4's sound from working well. The conf file should be automatically
created in sd:/dosbox/, I don't know why it has problems. I don't know if you
have
found any difference in the application crashing between the gbatemp version
and
version 0.71.01. We might have to go back to some of the old code.

Im not sure which version was last to have correct sound, but it may be Rev35. I
could be wrong though.

This could be an endianness problem, causing some sound corruption.
This issue is still open here - although some changes have been committed, they
have
not been verified: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?

I just compiled up to r48 and the sound in Commander Keen 4 is working
perfectly.
This was not the case with 0.72.01 where the sound was fairly buggy.

Also getting very fluid gameplay with frameskip at 2 in the conf. (even while
using
2xsai scaler)

Do you mind if I get a copy of r48 in a binary form? I dont know how to compile
stuff
nor do I have the programs to do that either.

Sure, check my attachment.

Though I don't know tantric's policy about this since it's not listed anywhere
that I
can see. If this in any way violates fair use, please remove it.

As for compiling it yourself, check out these links:

Thanks! Ill be sure to check it out. Also, maybe Tantric can use the source to
help
him fix the sound problem in the current version.

I noticed that r48 starts up having c:\ as sd:\apps\dosbox instead of
sd:\dosbox. I
cant get to my games due to that. Can you fix it?

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Uhh, I'm not so sure you understand what I did. I simply compiled the source
publicly
available up to revision 48. I didn't modify the source in any way.

The "fix" for the sound problem isn't in the current version because a release
hasn't
been made with the newest revisions included yet. (I'm guessing the sync to
dosbox
svn solved the problem.) All thanks belongs to tantric.

Ill just make a copy of sd:\dosbox to the sd:\apps\dosbox folder then.

I noticed that about r48 as well. I believe the change in r43 caused this.

If you read the modified readme, you'll see that sd:/dosbox/ is now mounted as D
instead of C.

D:\ works and Commander Keen 4 has correct sound. Thanks!

Just so you know, I put a post with a link to the attachment that you gave me on
Tehskeen. Hope you dont mind.

Again, that's something for tantric to decide. But considering his recent
fallout
with that site, I highly doubt he'd approve of that. Sharing the build on
google code
is one thing, posting it to that site is another.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
All right. If you want, Ill remove the link or tell them to go to Google Code
to get it.

Please wait for a formal release, don't be posting unofficial builds and binary
copies. When we feel it is stable, and some bugs are fully fixed, and the fixes
are
tested we do a release. Otherwise people start reporting issues about "r48",
which
is just an interim copy. I'm removing the download.

All right. Ill remove the link on Tehskeen too.

Thanks. And don't worry, you won't have to wait forever for an official release
with
the fix. :)
