You can configure other buttons (e.g. button 2) to fire and then save the
configuration. You should use the Joystick configuration menu.

To think I just came here to submit this very same issue.
For this to be properly configurable, I'd split the "Use Joypad as joystick"
option into "Use Joypad and Fire as joystick" and "Map Fire button to".

"Use Joypad as joystick" does not affect the fire button. It affects only the
up, down, left and right movements.
You can already map fire button to any wiimote or classic controll button using
"binding key to ..." and chosing "fire" in the virtual keyboard.
Is your suggestion for making the configuration more clear?

Oh, I was assuming the fire button's position couldn't be changed currently, so
I was just suggesting an option for binding a key to it.
I hadn't noticed that "Fire" was present in the virtual keyboard, sorry.
