The odd thing is that 1.0.12 is clearly ok on CRAN on most machines it has passed so far. So what's different about my R on my machine?

It turned out to be due to R.matlab in my local library. That package had been built with R-devel at some stage and there was an incompatibility there somehow. More details on r-devel here: https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2019-February/077297.html Sorry for the noise.
