Unfortunately, I find that "assimilate" doesn't seem like the most explanatory verb for what this function does. How about something more obvious along the lines of:
upgrade
rewrite
toVersion2
standardize
toCommonFormat (probably my favorite)
toInternalConvention
...
And remember, that this is a function that end users will rarely if ever type. We are not trying to optimize for minimal function name length. We are trying to optimize for minimal confusion.
