When you place a connector on a machine and then output a redstone signal to the machine, the signal is always a strong signal, meaning it bleeds into the blocks directly adjacent to it.
LaserIO has a setting for a "weak" signal, where the signal will only affect the block directly attached to the block.
Not so good at vanilla mechanics, but I think it's the difference between placing a lever on the block and placing it in front of the block.
