So has ShareXmod been merged with ShareX?

No, not to my knowledge. Most of the current code has, but there are still more
new features that should end up in ShareXmod.

But mcored just directed us to install ShareX and ShareXmod automatically
downloads ShareX 8.1 when it updates

As I understand it, this is because the new version of ShareXmod is not yet
finished. I believe he intends to also merge the ShareX code into ShareXmod
once it's all ready (if that hasn't happened yet), and then add some of those
new features I mentioned earlier. For now, ShareX is ahead of ShareXmod. Should
a time come when ShareXmod is discontinued in favor of ShareX, I believe this
code page will be closed with an explanation, and a link/redirect to the ShareX
page. Nothing I have been told so far has indicated that ShareXmod is being
discontinued.

As mopquill said, ShareXmod will continue sine die to trial new features to be
ultimately merged back to ShareX. Right now, all of the major features are
merged to ShareX in the past month. Refer to:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/communities/107831265244947724956

If you are missing any minor features, you are welcome to create an issue for
each feature so that we can focus our priorities in ShareX.
