Quality of Life Request: Option in settings to avoid ghost heat #281

The Problem

One problem with Ghost Heat is having to do annoying weapon groups with perfect timing to avoid it. It unfairly advantages players who use macros to trigger groups .5s apart, and penalizes players who don't use macros. Ghost heat is also confusing for new players who don't see the warning in mechlab and trigger it accidentally.

The solution

A check-box option in settings called "Avoid heat spikes."

How it would work

With the option on, only the first x available weapons of any group will fire when triggered (the maximum without triggering ghost heat), and then all weapons in that group will be disabled for the .5s necessary to avoid ghost heat. If there are mixed weapons in the group, the highest-damage combination fires first.

Examples

Uniform Weapons

So lets say you have a Piranha with 14 micro pulse lasers in one weapon group. With the option on, the first press of the button fires 8 of the micro pulse lasers. Then the group is disabled for .5s. The next press of the button (or holding the button) fires the remaining 6 as soon as the .5s expires.

Mixed Weapons

Where a mech has 4 MPL and 4 ML in one group, for example, the highest-damage mix would fire first. In this case, it would be 4 MPL plus 2 ML on the first button press, with the remaining 2 ML firing .5s later if the button is held or pressed again.

Gauss Rifles

If there are mixed gauss and non-gauss weapons in a group, the gauss weapon(s) fire first. So with 2 gauss & 1 PPC, the first button press charges and fires the gauss rifles, the second fires the PPC. This enables players to easily ready their gauss weapons before peeking.

Conclusion

Done. Worrying about ghost heat is no longer a thing. It's totally idiot-proof, and great for new players. You can just play and have fun. I think the option should default to on, honestly -- only experienced players would want to enable "heat spikes" (ghost heat). This issue was posted for discussion at Outreach HPG.

Mixed Weapons - Bigger damage usually means less range. Not sure if that approach is the best (pick up weapons with highest damage). Still it's better than nothing.
