I was interested to learn more about the actual difference between front-end programming and back-end programming. My dad is a back-end programmer and he's always said I would make an excellent front-end programmer and it was nice to learn what that actually means. In extremely simple terms, I learned that front-end programming deals with information being given to you (the look and style of a website, etc.) while back end deals with you giving information to something and where that information gets stored (like entering in data, credit card info, etc.) I also had no idea that web design and web development were different, or rather, web design is part of web development like a square is a rectangle but not vise versa. **Also y'all if I'm interpreting this wrong please let me know!!!!
I'm just interested in the whole thing and how it works. I've never taken a computer class like this before, or anything that has to deal with coding. So, basically, all of this information is new to me. I've used other websites to help me create a page before, but never have gone from the ground up. Of course, reading the syllabus, the quote at the top made me a little nervous. "If you think math is hard, try web design...." Lets face it, I haven't taken a math class since I was 18 and I'm now 24. But I'm really excited for this class, I think it's going to teach me a lot and step me out of my comfort zone! @jackelynstob I had no idea there was a difference between web design and web development either!
I am very unfamiliar with the entire concept of web design/development, so I am hoping I'll be able to acquire all new skill sets that will better prepare me for the near future regarding anything web-related. Since I'm a senior and on my way towards the career path, immersing myself in a course like this would also help me build a solid resume, in which being a Communications major is always very helpful. Looking forward to learning new things this semester!
My interest in web design was both personally and professionally motivated. I currently have my own personal website, but used a very simple to understand and control host and program, Ever Web. I am interested in learning more in depth about how I can change and better understand web design. I am also a part-time secretary/graphic designer for a real estate company and they have asked me to re-vamp their website and maintain it in the future. I know this class will provide me the beginnings to a marketable skill. I think it's important to keep learning and stay up to date with technology as well.
I'm excited but nervous to start web design. I've only taken one similar class, and that was creative coding. I don't have a natural skill for coding, so it's something I have to work hard on. I'm excited to do web design because I want to be an illustrator, graphic designer and animator, so having the ability to create and share websites is important.
I have always loved the idea of building a website with HTML. HTML is a newer language for me and being able to test my skills in this class will be great. Saying that I haven’t had much experience with using GitHub, learning this website is going to be new information for me but confident after a couple weeks I'll get the hang of it. I focus more on animation so making a website to share my work will be beneficial for me. I’m excited about this semester and can't wait to learn all the new skills this class will teach me.
Web design has always been of interest to me, so I am very excited about this course! Being a journalism major, I believe this class will come in handy for my future. This is all new to me, so I'm still trying to figure everything out (moodle & github), but I think I will get the hang of it! Learning how to create my own website is something I really want to be able to do... it is a tool I can utilize throughout the rest of my life.
I used to host my own website for my art and writing back in the 00's. I know some HTML and CSS but I am not up to date. What I'd like to walk away from this class with is a comfortable understanding of how media is presented to us through these coding languages. I'm majoring in film, BFA in DFT and I'm taking all of the animation classes they will allow me to take!
While my experience with web design and programming is very limited (I took a programming class in high school...in 2003), it's something I've always found interesting. I'm hoping to gain the basic tools and skills to leverage web design from a business perspective while I pursue my Marketing degree. My ultimate goal is to operate my own business and in this day and age of the Internet, having a proper website and knowing how to maintain and improve it is important.
No experience in web design or development. Always love learning a new skill. I think I am most excited to learn different coding languages and how they interact with each other. Not exactly sure how it will help me in the workplace but I am sure that will show itself by the end of the course.
I took Creative Coding last semester, so I'm familiar with GitHub and Atom. The class itself was fun, but different than I expected, and I'm really looking forward to the practical applications this class will be able to teach me.
I'm also hoping this course will help me learn about coding in a new way and build upon some of what I learned last semester.
This is my first experience whatsoever with coding, and I thought that first assignment was really interesting and easier than I expected. I can't wait to learn more and put that to use in my future plans and goals.
As a Finance and Marketing student, I do not have any experiences with the web design or coding. Actually I am a little bit nervous and also exciting for this class. I am expecting to learn more useful web design skill that will help me in my future career.
I took a coding class last semester and it took me for a spin needless to say. I'm new to website design and look forward to learning about it. No lie, I am a bit nervous because of my little experience with it and hope this class will help me to understand this new criteria.
I'm pretty new when it comes to web design/development, but I am eager to learn! I have taken a coding class that explored some creative aspects of while using Atom and I'm curious to learn how those smaller steps can be taken into bigger ones, even though all of it is still like a new language to me.
I've never learned about web design, coding or development so everything is new to me. I tried to make a website one time before but I couldn't make it because I didn't have any information and skill to make a website. I am kind of nervous but also really excited to take this class to learn about web design.
I took Creative Coding last semester, so I think that helped me a lot because I understood most of the information that was talked about during the week. I was happy to come here and know what we were talking about with Github and Atom since I didn't know anything about code before last semester. I think that since I know nothing about web design, taking that coding class will help me a little. Honestly, this class is a part of my curriculum for my Media Arts Major, so that's the main reason why I'm taking the class, but it's always good to know things like this in case a job opportunity came up.
Most of the information on the site is pretty new to me. I'm excited to learn and dive deeper into the world of coding and get a better understanding of the internet and website design.
What interested me about web development was the process that goes behind getting a website up on your own. I never liked websites that let you create websites cause they don't have a lot of room for personalization. By learning how to create my own I'm able to by pass having to use someone else templates and ideas. What was interesting for me to learn was how physical and tangible the internet is. I never knew that a wire connected everything together including through oceans to other continents. Almost puts into perspective the fact that things can't just buzz through air and have to be linked and grounded.
I am completely new to all of this and although I am really excited to learn it all, I was initially a little intimidated by the material. Going through this weeks information and assignments, I feel better about the information and the class, the layout of the website is great and the step by step tutorials are perfect.
@kaitlinclifford Same here! Except I didn't take creative coding, I just didn't pass this class last semester...but this is part of the media arts curriculum, so I'm trying. I still don't understand much of the actual science behind coding, but I know what it's supposed to look like in order to work now.
@kenzie-stag that wire video blew my mind too. Just a giant wire stuck in a hole on a beach somewhere, that is the internet. I also want to get a more personalized website up on my own. I've used Square Space in the past and a couple of other websites with templates. Although they're so much easier for me, they just don't look how I envision my own website looking and can be frustrating. Hopefully I can use the base of this class to learn how to do a bunch of crazy web page designs in the future.
