8 months ago i had the same problem, and i'm not exactly sure what causes it, but i was able to fix it by just loading a mod that has metal sonic's boss theme in its designated folder and nothing else.
I was playing through the game as normal, got to Stardust Speedway, and when the game tries to start the Metal Sonic boss, the screen goes black, does the "beep of death" (as I call it) and the whole console crashed.
I replayed the zone again to check if it was a fluke or something, and it did it again in the same spot. Maybe you should look into that, since I can't progress past Stardust Speedway without beating Metal.
