Merging changes from @anhknguyen96 in response to #297 as part of the GSoC preparations.

Thanks for these @anhknguyen96, I've made a few tweaks in your script, mainly so that it can be imported and used as a method also. Plenty more options which can be added to it, but it's a good start for a general purpose compatibility script.

@pgleeson need to merge this on the develop branch: we usually merge only releases on master
