Not able to login into WordPress from Metamask Mobile Browser #2954

Describe the bug I am not able to login into WordPress from Metamask Mobile Browser.

This works on other wallets like trustwallet, and other browsers like Chrome in mobile, but is not working on Metamask mobile.

To Reproduce

  1. Go to Metamask mobile, on Android
  2. Click on Browser
  3. Navigate to any wordpress site
  4. Login with username and password
  5. You are returned to the same login page

Expected behavior This url should login you and show the WP Dashboard.

This is fresh wordpress install with no extra themes or plugins.

I guess its an issue handling cookies or sessions.

I was doing further testing and this sessions / cookies issue happens not only in WordPress but in general to any login / session management, at least on PHP.

Seems like Metamask mobile is unable to handle sessions.

Not running a Wordpress site, but we have the same issue with our Laravel application. Android users can not log in to their accounts.

It seems that the Metamask Browser is not processing forms correctly? Every time I click the submit button on our login form (a standard <form method="post" action="/login"><button type="submit">login</button></form>) the page just reloads (the request is executed with a GET rather than a POST, and no form data is sent with the request).

Maybe there's an additional cookie management issue, but the form problem seems to be the primary concern.

It would seem that there are a few issues.

What I've been able to figure out is that the browser won't (at least, won't reliably) make POST requests.

Also, cookies are not being saved in the browser, and sent with the request.

I'd expect those are the main two things that have to be addressed to get the browser working in some capacity. As of right now, it's completely worthless on android.

Can't login to gravatar from here, nor can I authenticate with Google.

I've loaded forms and pointed them at requestbin.com to capture the http request from the metamask browser, and it doesn't send form data, and loads with a GET in many cases (even when form method is post).

There's def an issue with AT LEAST the cookie handling. There are other bug reports acknowledging as much, as well.

@jimrubenstein can you modify the Project Type on gitcoin, i'm not able to apply to work, only one person is allowed to work on issue. i would like to reproduce the bug on a local dev environment and see what's the problem can be.

ehi @jimrubenstein, i wasn't able to reproduce the error you face.

The steps i followed:

  1. build metamask mobile from develop branch
  2. install the app on a Google Pixel Simulator with Android v 11 and sdksdk_gphone_x86_arm
  3. created a wordpress sandbox here -> https://wpsandbox.net/
  4. successfully logged in from the dev environment
  5. on metamask i can see correctly the dashboard after logging in (see attached image)

This result is coerent with the initial result i saw from my physical device, correctly logged in on gravatar.

I was able to see the cookie correctly saved on device.

I don't know how to reproduce your issue, any idea?

I've tried to log in to Google (for Google auth), Twitter, and my NFT project site (blokpax.com) and in every case, the login is unsuccessful. Twitter/Google just tell me "something went wrong" and take me back to login. On my personal project, I've verified that login credentials are not actually being sent via the from.

Idk if its a session cookie problem, or if the cookies are "too long" (for instance, if theyre encrypted) or if there's a CSRF that's not being picked up and sent?

I tried in 2 MM versions, same behavior in both.

It's interesting to me that the login works for you, at all. Makes me wonder if the version on the app store is not up to date with the code here.

Looks like the play store is using the same version. I'm on a Galaxy Note 10+, but I have many of users on my site that are using all sorts of androids, and they all have the same issues.

I'm not really equipped/experienced with the native mobile app development, so I'm not sure where to really begin to even try to debug. That's why I went straight to trying to test the HTTP requests that I was receiving from MM Browser logins.

I tried also with v. 2.5.0 and 2.6.0, always without problem. It's very strange. Did you try with other physical device?

Which kind of test did you do with laravel?

@jimrubenstein as addtional test i've created an account on your site blokpax, and tried to login with MM browser, effectively i wasn't able to login, as you pointed out. So i think that the problem is on your side, not sure if metamask mobile browser do something weird or the problem is unrelated.

@jimrubenstein to answer my own question, i did test directly with android webview (as you can see from attached screenshot) effectively from there, i was able to login, maybe is worth trying something else to debug this ...

Exactly, I'm investigating further and maybe open a PR to address the issue. As of my test, on my local dev environment I was able to let MM browser work also with your site (blokpax).

👍🏼 Can't use it activity prize money never got coins will still have to pay I think it's best to delete it. Stop doing it. Waste of time in the future.

Hi. Same problem. Android. Project on YII2. Mobile browser MM does not save cookies and deletes any sessions itself when going to another page. On the work computer everything works without errors.

As far as I can tell, the version update was merged.

However, the same problem still exists in the android app -- version 3.4.1

Is there any way we can get this escalated and have the engineering team look deeper or write some tests against this behavior? It's incredibly frustrating to have the Android browser be worthless in any capacity that requires a cookie to exist on the browser.

Hello all, does this issue is solved. we have also the problem with our Dapp www.french-ico.com it's impossible to log in a wordpress account on metamask mobile.

It's ok with coinbasewallet, trustwallet, opera mobile but not on metamask mobile.

This still doesn't seem to be fixed - I'm trying to log into a Laravel app using MetaMask Mobile (v4.4.0 on Android) and have the same issues as above. It seems the browser just isn't storing the cookie and therefore not able to send it with the request, which then fails the csrf check.

Do any of the MM devs even look at these tasks? It seems insane that something like this can still be a bug. :/

Same problem here. iPhone XR version of Metamask will log into Wordpress. My Galaxy S8 can't sign into Wordpress via Metamask.
