Reviewed and edited QLD and NSW regular and bold, ascii glyphs only

Universal changes Shifted all glyphs left before respacing to avoid bisection of glyphs by cursor during editing better center font in spacing when used with other types put lowercase near origin to left justify by default in normal composition, and properly center in center composition.

Redefined start points to make contour order clear and enable predictability without consulting other masters.

Removed all excess control points from contours Where they were hidden in an overlapping contour When they were not required for the same shape.

Co-aligned all points where contours share the definition of a curve.

All spacing was reduced.

The diagonal branch strokes of nearly all lowercase bold glyphs were substantially lightened.

Many round terminals were reduced in point complexity.

Particular glyph changes All dots below !?, and above i j were enlarged All period and colon dots, !? Too, we’re raised to baseline plus a little undershoot. Dot at top of,: ; raised closer to x-ht to function with figures and caps. All % made figure height All & made uppercase height All slashes given undershoot so the nalance vertically with shorter figures than the caps. Lowercase k had a pointed intersection in counter, it’s now round. NSW had misnamed “tilde”, renamed “asciitilde” Space glyph narrowed.

Prototype VFs added in fonts.

I'm applying these changes to the new font sets, although some terms are a little confusing (given that we're both using different software).

My understanding of the terms "centre" and "origin" in Glyphs App matches the developer's (Mekkablue, link provided below). ie: shifting a glyph "left" involves adjusting the LSB and/or RSB, making it "centre" involves equal LSB's and RSB's. And "origin" applies only to transformations.

https://forum.glyphsapp.com/t/how-to-create-the-center-of-the-glyph/11474/4

I can leave this adjustment up to DB & SO if that's easier than elaboration.

Just to demonstrate the QLD font changes I can see in Glyphs App... (ie the blue glyph is my original glyph in the background). References to "center" and "origin" are not apparent here

Hey Tina,

‘Centering’ the font in this case referred to the uppercase. The lowercase and figures were then spaced to balance between uppercase, and may not be centered.

@dberlow I see now. Using the HHAHH method made it all fall into place. Thank you!

dberlow commented 2 years ago

My pleasure. These designs are challenge because the H and O, rounds and squares in general, have different angles, and a number of round shapes, which makes spacing a challenge.

@dberlow VIC-WA-NT font is proving to be the greater challenge as it's semi precursive and I'm not entirely sure what is good spacing for those glyphs. I don't have a teacher from any of those states to advise yet. I'll try to find some resources online to get an idea of the flow/balance

MezMerrit commented 2 years ago

@dberlow @sannorozco Starting to get feedback from NSW teacher. The lowercase t in NSW font is a tad too tight on the left side bearing. And lowercase j could do with some kerning when it's placed against other glyphs with a similar descender (particularly itself, as in jj). Otherwise, she seems happy with the over all flow and balance of the set.

While I haven't heard back from the QLD teacher yet, I have a feeling we'll get similar feedback from her. Additionally, I'm thinking kerning between capital T's and lowercase t's and f's might be the next thing they notice.

@sannorozco you guys did a great job spacing VIC-WA-NT font! Impressed! I was a bit lost as to balance/flow with all the precursive glyphs. Looks fab
