I recently applied the various updates to optional packages that were 'offered' 13 June. These packages included ltxbase and l3kernel. Since I had no reason not to, I applied all of the updates. However, following the update, compilation of anything (even a trivial MWE) throws the following error:
c:\users\me\MikTeX\tex/latex/l3backend\l3backend-dvips.def
! LaTeX Error: Control sequence \g__pdf_backend_object_int already defined.
I rolled my MikTeX install back pre-update, and then re-applied all of the offered updates, except ltxbase and l3kernel (guessing that one or the other might be the root of the problem). Compilations no longer threw the error.
Final experiment -- applied ltxbase update (figuring that if compilation threw no errors after updating to ltxbase, then the problem must/might lie with l3kernel? )
After apply ltxbase update, MWE compilation didn't throw the error. So, simple deduction -- problem with latest update to l3kernel? Final (obvious) experiment) - apply update to l3kernel. And...error as described above.
So, something about latest update to l3kernel seems to be causing the compilations of even simple MWE to fail. Its not hugely a big deal for me, since I can roll back to pre-update. But...there does seem to be a problem (and I do prefer to keep all my packages updated - optional or not).
