update for Xcode 10.1, remove unnecessary configuration options, more code modernizations #66

Mostly cosmetic changes to use Objective-C generics where appropriate and object subscripting. Also cleaned up the build settings. Lastly updated the LatestUpgradeCheck to Xcode 10.1.
