Black Screen on PSX core #219

Closed drewbz1089 closed 1 year ago

drewbz1089 commented 1 year ago

PSX core was working fine before I updated it today but now when I go to PSX under Consoles I just get a black screen and when I try loading games from their respective folders it recognizes game region but screen remains black and does not load games. Any ideas? Have all three bios files renamed boot.rom (1,2 etc.)

Thanks,

-Louis

This is really odd, are your games stored on your SD Card or on an external drive? if they are on an external drive can you try removing the bios files from your SD Card and see if that changes anything. Cores can sometimes get confused with the BIOS's in multiple places.

drewbz1089 commented 1 year ago

They're stored on a sd card, I do get two different psx cores under the consoles folder after Mister update but when I take out the sd and load it back on the laptop it only shows the one psx folder

Fuzzybane commented 1 year ago

hmmm does other cores work? have you tried the latest unstable core from the discord?

drewbz1089 commented 1 year ago

everything else works perfect sans the Saturn as I'm trying to figure out how to add Saturn now. Cant seem to figure out the exact downloads I need. I did join the discord but wasn't sure where to find downloads for these things.

InquisitiveCoder commented 1 year ago

Make sure you have the latest version of the MiSTer framework (the file simply called "MiSTer" on the top level of the SD card.)

drewbz1089 commented 1 year ago

I will try that today when I get out of work, thanks!

I'm in a very similar position. New MiSTer user (so I don't have a "previously working" state), but I do have a number of computer cores working (including loading BIOSes via a cifs share). ROMs are downloaded and renamed via update_all and I've removed the SD card copies of them so they are only on the cifs share.

The roms seem to be loading (I see the rom loading progress bar at startup), and as with @drewbz1089 loading media auto detect the media region works just fine too. But no PSX boot screen.

Output is HDMI -> an HDMI to SVGA converter to a SVGA 4:3 monitor (OSD and other cores don't seem to mind that), though I have just replicated using a standard HDMI setup.

Framework is 221224. Behaviour is the same with the most recent nightly unstable build.

@GlennPegden2 are your BIOS files on your cifs share?

GlennPegden2 commented 1 year ago

They are.

I'm convinced it's reading them ok from there as if I remove/rename them, I no longer get the very brief "bios loading" progress bar.

Made sure the main updated “Mister” file was on the top level of the SD card when I got off work yesterday. Still nothing when I try loading PSX besides a black screen.

Thanks,

I am an idiot. My problem was a PEBKAC error and is now resolved (ran memtest and it highlighted my sdram module wasn't being recognised).

I'll go and stand in the corner now ;)

Obviously @drewbz1089 issue is likely to be different.

Download core again manually

Kuba-J commented 1 year ago

Any news ?

drewbz1089 commented 1 year ago

Updated the PSX core manually with the newest release 12/21/22 and still the same results. I've got everything else running fine sans PSX and Saturn. I'm a newb and received an Ultimate Mister a little before Christmas. I'm doing everything off a Mac if that makes a difference. When I first received the Mister PSX core ran fine, ran the Mister Updater and then I've been getting just black screens wether loading the core or games. Made sure the main Mister file was on the top level of the SD and also tried running the latest unstable version. As for the Saturn I'm not sure where to fine the BIOS files because the only ones I can seem to find are BIN files that won't let me unzip on Mac. I've joined the Discord but not sure where to look as far as cores/bios go.

Thanks!

Yes, very likely the BIOS is missing. You must see the BIOS animation after loading the core or the BIOS files are not found.

Trying to load games without BIOS is pointless, they cannot work.

Please read the readme: https://github.com/MiSTer-devel/PSX_MiSTer#bios
