updates client deps and code #80

This is a small update of the log and fern dependency. The rustfmt was run so there is a little bit of noise.

The code doesn't compile for me on rust 1.42, this is a small PR to see if you are interested in making updates.

No matter what you decide with this PR, I am super thankful for your guide!

Thank you for the PR @happysalada, but I'm not actively working on this repo so I don't think I'll proceed. It's been several years since I last made any updates and a lot of my writing is done on https://adventures.michaelfbryan.com/ nowadays.
