The page in question, in the section about Custom Operating Systems, says:
Archive your build for apps with a custom operating system in .zip format.
This is true for a Windows .exe we have (these are Adobe plugins, not actual apps, but they have installers), but it's not the case for a Mac .pkg file -- no need to zip it.
There may be other formats that are directly supported as well. Please revise this one-line section with this information. Also, would be good to note that if you are uploading a build via the API, you must supply version and build info (not necessary when uploading a supported bundle type from which App Center can extract the information from the bundle directly).
