Is it enough to use RBAC roles?

This page explains how I can use Azure Automation to connect to SQL Azure database for management.

What I do not understand is why I need to add the automation account to the server as a member of role db_owner?

Can you please make it clearer what the RBAC Role "SQL Server Contributor" does?

When readin documentation I get the impression that it should be sufficient to grant Azure Automation the RBAC role "SQL Server Contriutor" - is this correct?

Or do I also need to add the automation account to each server as db_owner?
