Renewals #14165

Closed ed7257 closed 6 years ago

ed7257 commented 6 years ago

1)Guys, what do you mean by renewal in the text? How is that different from buying SA? 2) What options is better for BYOL: buy subscription agreement for SQL (EAS) and bring SQL license to Azure or buy License with SA and then pay SA only? 3) When I use license mobility, should I run both Primary and Secondary replicas in the same Azure Data Center or can deploy in different ones? 4) Didn't MS rebrand License Mobility into Azure Hub benefit for Azure VMs?
Thank you.

3) clarification for 3rd question, SA benefit of free passive secondary replica, not license mobility.

@ed7257 To clarify, by SA, do you mean Software Assurance? @rothja Can you please chime in on this one and share your insights :)

ed7257 commented 6 years ago

Yes. Software Assurance

@ed7257

  1. You need to have both - SQL server license and Software Assurance (which is a required option through some volume licensing programs and an optional purchase with others) for BYOL. The article is referring to the renewal of SQL server license not SA. Software Assurance (SA) provides you extra capabilities like 24x7 technical support, deployment planning services, end-user and technical training, exclusive technologies and rights, and the latest Microsoft software releases and unique technologies—all in one cost-effective program.
  2. For BYOL, you need to use an existing SQL Server Volume License with Software Assurance. which option to choose would vary depending on various factors like cost etc.
  3. As per my understanding, both License Mobility and Azure Hybrid Benefit options are available as of now. @rothja Please correct me if I am wrong and share your knowledge.
ed7257 commented 6 years ago

thank you for the quick responses

1) When you say renewal, what exactly you mean by this? When companies renew agreement/licenses they buy SA. so for me these 2 facts (renewal and buy SA) are synonyms. Let me know if you see it differently.

2) if I have a subscription agreement (Enterprise Subscription Agreement ), can I bring my "subscription licenses"? Would not it be cheaper than buying permanent licenses with SA?

3) question is still open..

4) I believe moving licenses to Azure (VM, or SQL MI) is covered by Azure Hybrid Benefit (renamed for Azure VMs from License Mobility).

@craigg @rothja Can either of you please chime in and share what I am missing. Thanks :)

rothja commented 6 years ago

@ed7257 Thanks for your question on this. Licensing, unfortunately, can be complex and nuanced. I think when it comes to the specifics, the best bet is to contact the Microsoft or partner representative that is handling licensing for you. With that said, we do want to use the right terms and descriptions in the content to not cause confusion. I have a contact who has extensive experience in licensing and I'll see if she can answer these questions and/or make recommendations on the content. I'll try to get back to you soon. Thank you.

@ed7257 So sorry for the delay. I spoke with my licensing contact, and she provided some additional details. First of all, I am not a licensing expert, so I would recommend getting official answers from the guide here. With that said, Software Assurance is required as part of an Enterprise Agreement. It is not required as part of all types of agreements, such as a Select or Select Plus. Some of the benefits come from the EA, while additional benefits come from Software Assurance (upgrade rights, passive server rights, license mobility, cold backup rights, unlimited virtualization by host). Unfortunately, per my contact, we can't estimate what options would be cheaper because these pricing questions have to be handled by a licensing contact. Of course, generic licensing prices are on the Azure pricing page for rough estimates. Azure Hybrid Use is not the same thing as License Mobility (License Mobility is defined on page 29 of the SQL Server 2017 Licensing Guide). Please let me know if this helps to clarify your licensing questions. Unfortunately, to a certain extent, I have to be vague because only a licensing specialist from Micrsoft can explain exactly how the numbers would work in your specific agreement. Again, sorry for the delay on getting these answers to you.
