Problem: SDK installer is taking a long time when trying to install the communications service #118

Hello! I am trying to install the SDK onto Windows 10, which may or may not be the release described. And it seemingly is taking a long time to do so, when concerning the communications service for the device. This device is the Avnet designed one. It kept throwing a complaint that the service wasn't starting or responding depending on the interpretation.

Finally clicking cancel on it I got to the point where it mentions processing Visual Studio. I have not seen any of the favorite complaints that of no products for it to install onto.

Update: It finally finished with an error message that tells me it failed. All of this devolves from https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure-sphere/install/install I simply followed the instructions there to download the SDK. I made sure my Avnet designed device was plugged in first. And then followed those instructions. It finally exploded and delivered that log blurb when I rebooted the computer and watched the installer restart. Debugging performance issues are when I get my board connected and working. I know to turn to those communities when all of this is resolved and then those issues surface. The documentation does stress that the user needs an Azure connection which is more business related, then the usual user ones such as Office 365 and even OneDrive.

For the second attempt, I didn't make any changes. I just tried again. I read on Microsoft website when installing Visual Studio to try again if it fails. I am using VS 2019 Enterprise trial. On my order it says Avnet, it's being posted today. Sorry, I can't suggest much. Hope Hackster.io Azure Sphere community can help.

My path is different, C:\Users\admin\AppData\Local\Azure Sphere Tools. There are two files in there, settings.json and tokens.cache. If I follow your path, when I get to %WINDIR%\serviceprofiles\localservice\ I don't see appData folder. For ncpa.cpl, yes there is a Azure Sphere tap Windows adpter.

I recommended to @DoctorWho8 to spot-check %WINDIR%\serviceprofiles\localservice\appdata\local\Azure Sphere Tools\restore.json because that file may be preventing the Slip Service from starting up, causing the installation failure. Please note that Windows stores application data for Service accounts in %WINDIR%; this is in contrast to user application data stored in %LOCALAPPDATA%.

Have you run into any additional issues with the installation?

Actually @olegkhar I did do that. I promptly put the board aside, at least temporarily. Mostly because of other unrelated issues. But also because of the issues that have surfaced concerning its hosting methods. See I do not use Office 365, and I rarely even check Outlook.com although I do have an account on it...... But I am waiting here to see if the rest of you have solutions to your problems. Perhaps that solution you receive will work for me, next time.

It's a thought. Of course I'll need to check to see what this system is using. (It is indeed running Windows 10) However.... The particulars that Microsoft has up on it, is pretty good, except for the presence of Ubuntu inside it.

Point of fact is that I have not done anything with this new device, because of issues both not related here, and the one big problem regarding an appropriate Azure subscription.

@olegkhar and @AshokPeddakotla-MSFT basically that big problem is in regards to the vague description regarding why I would need to setup an account on Azure. For example I do not have an account with Office 365 especially since I prefer to make use of Office products locally. It does not completely explain why having one would be a benefit to gaining an account with the special features needed to gain such methods.

The other one is that the last time I needed to setup something on Azure, I found the instructions in general to be unnecessarily and almost deliberately vague. And extremely annoyingly obtuse.

The other one is more a local issue. I needed to update the release of Windows 10 that runs here, and that was completed over a two day period, starting this Afternoon my time.

I am going to try and install the SDK again later the coming day or over the weekend. I'll know more by Monday.

@DoctorWho8, on why we need an Azure account, keeping in mind the Azure services and this Azure Sphere Development board is for Business Enterprises. As with IT Administration, you need authentication and authorization management (IAM) for users.

The main selling point of Azure Sphere and Azure certified IoT devices is security services and Azure Analytics services.

For IoT device users, if you want to use the Azure IoT Hub and other Azure IoT services, you'll need an Azure account, as these services incur charges.

(Each Microsoft 365, Office 365, Azure, and Dynamics CRM Online tenant is automatically an Azure AD tenant.) It's saying that if you have this, you don't need to create a tenant again, not that you need these services. You can get a 30 day trial of Office 365 for free, to get the Active Directory account for free.

The easiest option might be this link to create an account, https://account.azure.com/organization

Okay here I am trying again. I have updated Windows 10 using the Windows update tool rather than letting the Windows update service try to figure things out.

During the SDK install I saw the installer throw up a prompt that basically says it can't start the communications service, and wonders if I have the right, ah, rights, to do so. And it came up three times now.

@DoctorWho8 I have the same problem that you and ch8uk met, i tried different laptop to install the SDK but all failed and gating at the installing for a long time. the VS 2019 was crash after i canceled the SDK install, the prompt told me the VS was not completely install and need to reinstall (actually is can run normally last time), so i ran the VS installer again, it took a very long time, almost 2-3 hours to repair the VS, immediately, i started to install the SDK and quickly done at this time (accept the elevation prompt if one appears, no any prompt when gating), just for your reference.

@David1017 I just installed VS2019 Enterprise version. I do not think the problem is at that end of things. I'll probably rerun the installer for it, and see what happens.

Understand, I have no idea about the rootcause, the latest status is SDK install successful after repair VS 2019.
