SharePoint 2019 - Classic and Modern together #316

Article suggestion

SharePoint site owners who upgrade from 2013/2016 to 2019 will discover two fundamentally different user interfaces (and user experiences) as Classic remains, and a snapshot of Modern becomes available. With some forethought and planning, this 2019 upgrade can be a stepping stone to getting your users comfortable with Modern, as Classic is destined to be retired in some future version.

Article should summarize the fundamental differences (branding, web parts, user experience, etc) and propose solutions to operating a collection/farm that mixes the two together.

On-prem SharePoint upgrades will never be a hot, trendy topic - but there is a large on-premise user-base out there, and these Community Docs should serve those site owners.

@PatD I don't disagree, but I think many admins will find the modern UX insufficient and lacking even some basic functionality. I can't recommend modern in 2019. At the very least, for 2019, there needs to be acknowledgement that the modern UX is very limited and one cannot expect close to feature parity in SPO. I see a lot of that in forums, 'XYZ feature in modern is in SPO, and I can't find it in 2019'.

This is changing with SPSE, but ever so slowly.

The more time goes by, the less appeal modern in 2019 has. It was a snapshot from late 2018, so it's woefully out of date at this point.

Given the amount of time that's passed, maybe this article no longer makes sense?

@sympmarc I think it makes sense for SPSE, with a very brief mention of "2019 is stuck in 2018". With SPSE, the article will ever be evolving -- even onto it's own implementation of modern that you won't find in SPO.

@tseward - interested in taking a crack at it?

@sympmarc Sure.
