Need clarification about max number of datasets and reports in a Workspace. The sentence in the doc uses an "or" condition that makes the language unclear. Is the maximum this: #models + #reports <=1000, or is it #models <=1000 only, or # reports <=1000 only? #5087

BTW, this is a question directly from a customer, who said they don't know how to interpret our documentation. This is the specific sentence that we can't make sense of: "Workspaces can contain a maximum of 1,000 semantic models, or 1,000 reports per semantic model." It's the issue of "per semantic model" that is confusing. One could read this as max = 1000 models X 1000 reports = 1M, or perhaps it was intended to be #models+#reports = 1000. Not sure.

And please pass along that the current way this is articulated in the documentation is non-sensical in the extreme. I know you are just the messenger. Don’t shoot the messenger! 😊

But seriously, just pulling it again from Copilot (below). If you just think through the possible math option of that first bullet, you can’t make sense of it. For example, is the “1000 reports per semantic model” an average, median or mode?

I think what it means is that the total number of objects that are either semantic models or reports must be <= 1000. There’s no “per semantic model” involved. But … then look at bullet 2. It seems to indicate that the maximum of combined model+report objects is 200. Hmmmm.

And … This statement doesn’t cover the case where the semantic model is in Workspace A and people are writing reports all over the place in other Workspaces that use Workspace A’s model as their source. In that case, does the model in Workspace A keep track of how many reports are connected to it across the entire tenant? And is that maximum allowed number 1000? I kind of doubt it.

So … enough of that craziness. I hope the PM can get back to us with a correction on this soon.

Thanks.

-Geoff

I asked Copilot: “is there a maximum number of objects allowed in a Power BI Workspace? Is that documented somewhere clearly?”

Answer: Yes, there are certain limitations to the number of objects in a Power BI Workspace: · A workspace can contain a maximum of 1,000 semantic models, or 1,000 reports per semantic modelhttps://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/collaborate-share/service-new-workspaces1https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/collaborate-share/service-new-workspaces. · The workspace allows only a maximum of 200 datasets to be published within it. This limit of 200 includes the combination of datasets and reports togetherhttps://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Service/Power-BI-workspace-limits/m-p/5023052https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Service/Power-BI-workspace-limits/m-p/5023053https://stackoverflow.com/questions/52073384/power-bi-workspace-limits. However, there doesn’t seem to be a clear-cut answer to the maximum number of workspaces one can have in a single Power BI tenanthttps://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Service/Maximum-number-of-workspaces-in-a-Power-BI-Tenant-for-NEW/m-p/9360184https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Service/Maximum-number-of-workspaces-in-a-Power-BI-Tenant-for-NEW/m-p/936018. Hi, @Geoff @.***> -- here's the latest answer I've gotten:

"The answer is it depends. The limit is on the number of “packages” in a workspace. A package can contain a report, or it can contain a dataset, or both. It nominally corresponds to a single PBIX file, and if it contains multiple items those items will only count as 1 against the limit."

But that's not the final answer, as far as I can tell. They are still asking questions.

Not really. I might suggest:

The total number of semantic models and reports in a workspace cannot exceed a thousand.

Is this sentence clearer?

"Workspaces can contain a maximum of either 1,000 semantic models, or one semantic model with 1,000 reports."

And please pass along that the current way this is articulated in the documentation is non-sensical in the extreme.

I know you are just the messenger. Don’t shoot the messenger! ??

Answer:

Yes, there are certain limitations to the number of objects in a Power BI Workspace:

· A workspace can contain a maximum of 1,000 semantic models, or 1,000 reports per semantic modelhttps://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/collaborate-share/service-new-workspaces1https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/collaborate-share/service-new-workspaces.

It’s worth noting that a person with a Power BI Pro license can be a member of a maximum of 1,000 workspaceshttps://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Service/Maximum-number-of-workspaces-in-a-Power-BI-Tenant-for-NEW/m-p/9360184https://community.fabric.microsoft.com/t5/Service/Maximum-number-of-workspaces-in-a-Power-BI-Tenant-for-NEW/m-p/936018.

Please note that these limits are subject to change and it’s always a good idea to check the official Microsoft documentation for the most up-to-date information.
