Incorrect mapping of greek letters in Calibri italic #759

The characters are U+03B8 θ U+03B2 β → U+03D1 ϑ U+03D0 ϐ.

The choice of which forms to use as default is a stylistic decision regarding the display of italics using the more cursive forms. Unicode distinguishes the formal and cursive forms of some Greek letters for the purposes of mathematics. In Greek language text, the cursive forms are often the norm in italic fonts, in the same way that cursive forms of a g etc. are the norm in Latin italic fonts.

It probably was not a good idea to have simply swapped the forms for the U+03D1 ϑ U+03D0 ϐ, so that those become the formal variants in the italic, since these are supposed to be specifically the ‘curled beta’ and ‘script theta’ according to Unicode. But this is the sort of thing that happens when variant forms are separately encoded in Unicode: they end up being treated as free variants when one form is appropriate to a particular style of typeface.

Will get it fixed.

Fixed in the Calibri version 6.24 and higher.

Thanks, Ali

You should have the new fonts if your Win11 is up to date. v6.26.(2022-05-06) - Windows 11 22H2 (2022-09) I just checked and that version is fixed. This is not the cloud version.

This really ought to be updated in Windows 10 immediately, there are other errors in the font too, one of which causes major inconvenience in Viet Nam: Ệ renders as Ẹ̃, which isn't even a valid letter in Vietnamese. It too has been fixed in 6.26, but many people continue to need Windows 10.

Considering quite how long ago it was fixed and the updated font was released, I don't understand why it is not yet in Windows 10.

Yes, these font fixes should also be pushed to Win10 users. But they (MS) have not done that for a number of fixed fonts. Bad policy.

My primary laptop is Win10, and I have two other Win11 systems. Don't tell Ali above, but I have back-ported a number of fixed fonts to my Win10 machine (needed for a documentation project I am working on.) I use the file manager in 7-Zip (started as admin) to delete the normally protected fonts, and then just paste-in the updated versions. Takes a couple minutes.

Them not updating broken fonts can be a real PITA for many users who still have many Win10 machines in their companies. You are not the first user who has posted this problem. Not acceptable.

My apologies for not updating this thread. I will work on getting the fonts rolled out to previous version. I will post before and after pictures just to make sure I got all the desired fixes.
