Plus ca change

CeleneA commented 3 years ago

Jane - which lab hoster were you using? We haven't actually updated the environment so I am following up.

QAJaneHowell commented 3 years ago

I am using Learn on Demand (LOD). I have created a new trial of D365 F&O today and it shows the Inventory Management Module. The environment is therefore out of date.

CeleneA commented 3 years ago

looking at the screenshot - it looks like you are in workspaces rather than modules. but I will check

QAJaneHowell commented 3 years ago

Definitely in the Modules area. image

Jane - I am not able to reproduce. Can you reach out directly to LODS support?

TesterTesterson1004 commented 3 years ago

I'm trying to get a handle on potential causes for this issue (I have access to LODS enviro, but not Xtreme) and as far as I can tell LODS is using the identical F&O v37 VM version as any other hoster would be using. Initially I ran through several repro tests from fresh lab start, executing the 'AdminUserProvisioning' desktop shortcut to .exe, provide it the default email/creds, and then once successful logged in to the local site w/same provided credentials to confirm whether Inventory Management is present - at least in these tests, so far, I have not been able to repro the problem on LODS - when using USMF (or any other company entity in that dropdown that I have tried, for that matter)

In each lab launch test it is present as expected:

This leads me to believe that either:

a.) There is some form of 'glitch' that can occur in the initial 'provisioning' of the account, in the local site, and/or in the various underlying services supporting the 'local' Dynamics site that can intermittently cause the module to not be installed properly, or perhaps be 'present' but not visible.

or

b.) Possibly following the instructions between the first lab and a subsequent lab where the issue first is noticed causes something to occur that deletes/deprovisions/makes inaccessible that Inventory Management module.

Although my tests have not yet included running through every single instructions from the first lab up to the Mod 1/Lab 5 & 8 portions where it seems Inventory Management is first used, it seems option 'b.)' would be a lot less likely, or there would be a lot of cases/issues filed on the identical problem.

@CeleneA Do you have any insight on what, specifically, 'provisions' the Inventory Management module in the site to begin with? Is it present & configured by default in the stock VM? Or possibly what sort of log files or other data might be useful in diagnosing an (apparently) intermittent issue such as this?

The VM itself seems heavily proprietary/custom, so I'm afraid my instincts don't help me much in trying to delve deeper to a solution that might explain the issue, and/or recover in place. (aside from just 'end the lab instance and start a new one'.

TesterTesterson1004 commented 3 years ago

Aha! I think this may explain things: If one starts at a fresh lab instance/fresh VM, registers the user account, logs in to the website - confirm you see Inventory Management at that point.

Next, go to the Settings cog (upper right), and then select User Options

From the resulting Preferences tab, reset the default Language from en-US to something else - say, en-GB.

Above the Options page, click the Save button.

Do a CTRL+Refresh in Internet Explorer, then return to the Modules on the left side of the site, and Inventory Management (and probably a few others) are now missing.

To fix for this, revert to en-US. (and also the save/refresh steps, of course)

I don't know enough about the underlying app to know where to go to fix this and still allow the International Language settings to work w/out losing modules, but probably some assemblies, .dlls, and/or other bits need to be recompiled/rereleased/etc with multi-language support. (or, alternatively, various Dynamics courses that use this VM might need a 'warning/alert' at the beginning to indicate the Language option should not be altered from the defaults? (less satisfying for International customers, obviously!!)

QAJaneHowell commented 3 years ago

Thank you for testing this and finding a solution. I will ensure that learners leave all language settings alone!

Sounds like we have tracked down the root cause. Closing the bug.
