i'm not sure what's going on, but i think that when a robot is mining and moving in lazy chunks, the robot picks itself up. I came back and saw the particle effects like a robot unable to move, but there was no robot. any blocks placed in either the block with the particle effects or the block the robot is mining is mined by the robot.
Lastly, when i placed a creative robot in that block, where the particles were, the missing robot was placed instead. The robot continued on in it's program like nothing had happened. But inside the robot's inventory was another copy of the robot, and it's tool, like it had been mined by the robot.
It's happened twice now (i now have 3 copies of my original robot and all it's gear).
