LAV Needs to be Ported to Media Foundation and enabled as a library that can be included in Windows 8 Apps #316

Describe the issue you're having:

Because Windows 8 apps require Media Foundation it means that MKV, MPEG2, DTS,
DTS Master, and TrueHD are not supported. There is a despirate need for a
linkable component based on Media Foundation that can be included in apps just
like Lav.

How can the issue be reproduced? Sample File?

Note that all but one app in the Windows 8 app store cannot support MKV etc.

What version of the product are you using? In which Player?

Please provide any additional information below.

While I realize that directshow has done well, MS has essentially ditched it
and because of the significant improvements than Windows 8 native apps can
bring to home theater etc. it is highly desirable to have these apps work with
mkv etc. so providing a media stack based on media foundation that is open
source and can be used in any app in Windows 8 would be a boon to everyone.

There are no immediate plans for Media Foundation.

If I might ask, why? Essentially all plays will use them, but there are a ton
that won't use what you're building now.

This would solve all of the media center and extender issues, and would also
help all Windows 8 apps.

Some reasons:

- There are no good MF players available (WMP/WMC is by no means "good")
  - As a consequence, all players i use are DirectShow -> no personal interest at all
- MF and DS are quite different, i do not have the resources to maintain two
versions at the same time.
- DirectShow is still dominant

So, not going to happen any time soon, if ever.

Your missing the point: I'm not talking about using these in Windows Media
player, or even Windows Media Center. I'm looking forward to the day when there
are no desktop apps anymore, and they're all Windows 8 apps. It's less than 5
years away at most, especially given the relatively quick adoption of Windows 8
that is occurring.

Further this is the root to Windows Phone as well.

Combine the fact that DirectShow is going away and quickly with the reality
that MF is the future, this should definitely be on the roadmap. (i.e. Plex for
Windows 8, XMBC for Windows 8, etc. all desperately need a library for these
functions that they can embed in their apps right now, and there are dozens of
others in the Windows Store that are all begging for the same thing)

No, its you that is missing the point. I just don't care for Windows 8 or the
mobile revolution.

I care for playback right now, and like i pointed out, i just don't have the
resources to do both, so i focus on what i can actually use *right now*.

You are free to develop a MF filter yourself, because i won't.
