I agree. Can you at least make the background transparent? I have a dark gray
background, so the icon now shows up as a black box with white lettering on top
of that gray background. So the look isn't the cleanest. Also, not sure you
need the charging lightening bolt indicator.. my phone already has an indicator
showing it's charging. Thanks for an otherwise great app! I'm using the Pro
version on an HTC One X

Hi. Thanks, both of you, for filling out this issue report. Clearly I've got
my wires crossed in one way or another, as your screenshot shows that the
change I made to the default icon set was *not* intended for your device. Is
your device running ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich / Android 4.0+)? If not, then I've
screwed something up in the way the Market (Play Store) filters devices. If
so, then things are more complicated than I realized.
As I understood things, ICS *always* dims and shrinks the status bar icon. And
quite significantly, such that the battery icon I've been using for years is
almost impossible to read. Based on your report (and I've just checked
Wikipedia, which says that both the EVO 4G LTE and the One X from comment 1 are
running ICS), it sounds like HTC, at least, has modified their builds of ICS so
that this isn't always true.
That kind of sucks, since I can filter in the Market based on which version of
Android a device is running, but I can't filter based on manufacturer or device
model. So I guess my best option might be to do what SpencerScheffy suggests,
and make the background transparent instead of black. (I was also assuming
that ICS *always* had a pure black status bar, which is now clearly also not
true.) That makes me wonder how the icon will look in the drop-down
notification tray, however. On stock Android, I think it would look so-so, but
as I'm learning here, Android varies quite a bit, so it could look even worse
on some devices.
So I'm going to have to think further about how best to handle this. It's
uglier but still readable for some percentage of ICS users, but at least it's
finally readable for some other percentage.
For now:
1. Sorry for making things worse; I had no idea this was going to be worse on
any devices.
2. I can definitely make the charging bolt indicator optional for Pro users.
3. Pro users, at least, can get the classic colored battery icons as a plugin:
* Open up Battery Indicator Pro
* Go to the Settings
* Go to 'Colors and Themes'
* Go to 'Get Plugins', which will either be a menu option or a '+' icon
* Scroll down and click on "Download Classic-1.0.0"
* Click on the download to install the plugin.
Then, back in the same 'Colors and Themes' settings in Battery Indicator, you
can choose the new theme and set up the colors however you like.

I have ICS with Samsung Galaxy Nexus and downloaded the classic plugin. I
suggest, as far as color goes, that instead of a classic icon, you just make
the numbers colored, bold font for pro users. If you throw in a transparent
background it will be universal among phones.
Just a thought. I do love the app though.

Yes, the HTC EVO 4G LTE is basically Sprint's version of the HTC One X. These
phones use HTC Sense 4.0 on top of ICS. I'm not sure what you mean by "dim and
shrink." I haven't noticed this on my phone.
On my home screen the status bar itself has about a 50% opacity. When you
swipe to pull down the notification tray or if you are in an app, the status
bar changes and starts out dark gray and fades to almost black. I'd say around
hex #353533 fading to #101010 (it's very subtle).
In the drop-down notification tray, my phone is using a dark background but it
isn't black so you do see a black box around the battery percentage.
I'll attach a screenshot of my device's home screen and a the notification tray
pull-down for reference.

Thanks for posting that screenshot. I've added one here that shows what stock
Android 4.0 does: the icon as presented in the status bar is both dimmer and
smaller than the actual image I've given it. There's no way around this, so
I'm forced to do what I've done, and just try for something that is still
readable after being dimmed and shrunk.
That opaque status bar at the home screen makes me a little nervous about
making my number just a white number on a fully transparent background.
Although the clock looks okay, so maybe it will work.

Here is another screenshot with a white-ish background. The regular clock is
still readable. I think a transparent background would work.

With ICS on my HTC EVO 4g LTE the battery percentage number was much smaller
before the recent update. It's now much easier to read. The issue for me
after the update is the black box doesn't look as good if you're using anything
other than black wallpaper. A transparent background would solve this issue.
Thanks for such a great program, its the first thing I install on every new
phone.

Okay, thanks everyone.
There seems to be consensus that the white number is fine if I change the
background from black to 100% transparent. There's some concern that there may
be devices that this is worse for, but it definitely seems worth trying. I'll
get something pushed out soon. This will be Pro users first so I can gather
feedback, and assuming it works out, then I'll do the same to the free version.
Thanks for the feedback, screenshots, and constructive suggestions.

First, thanks for a quality app. I really like the new icon in the notification
bar. However, the appearance could be improved in the notification pull down
menu. Please add transparency if possible. Thanks again

Sorry for taking so long with this. Work has begun, I've just been sidetracked
by slightly higher priorities. I expect to at least have a test version posted
here within the next week.

Okay, I've pushed an update to both Free and Pro, that (among other things)
uses a transparent background rather than the black square background for
Android 3.0+.
Please report back here if there are any problems with this.
