Adding whistles as an actual item. #41

Basically give players actual whistles that they can use and upgrade to the higher level of whistle through making it from let’s say l1 to orth and so on.

I want whistles to actually do something so here’s a pretty scuffed list of what they would do not lore specific but it’s something.

Bell - makes ring noise when used. Red - applies glowing to player only in l1 if used in lower layers mobs can spawn around them. Sorta like an sos flare.

Blue - same as red but also gives glowing and a bit of night vision. Extends to l2

Moon - applies glowing, night vision for a little longer and pushes mobs away a bit.

Black - gives significant buffs including absorption and depending on how long you hold it down it can damage the player a bit but also damages surrounding mobs sorta like ow loud noise.

Upgrade quest will be assigned and basic go down to layer x and get x amount of materials from layer x and return with materials and you get whistle upgrade.

Feel free to expand upon this idea.

Baron and I actually came up with a system that both implements whistles and encourages going up and down each layer. Each whistle acts like a key so to speak, but not for layers. For an Elevator. Red whistles can use an elevator to L1, Blue whistles can use it for L2, Moon for l3, and Black for L4. No shortcuts to L5. To earn the whistle, you aquire items in each layer and turn them back in to Orth in exchange for the upgraded whistle. The whistle is not just a physical item, but also your rank. The items asked to collect would be specific to each layer/whistle you wish to obtain. As you upgrade your whistle, you will need to collect more and more items until you finally unlock the next whistle. These whistles unlock a special area for each whistle and allows you to go down to a specific layer. What this will also do, is unlock the ability to USE your whistle as a way to go back up to Orth without climbing all the way back to the top. Let me explain:

The Elevators you can use are based on whistle, correct? Well thats only for going down. To go back up, you have to go a layer ABOVE whatever layer your elevator takes you to. For Red whistles, this is pointless, but say you're a Blue whistle and climbing out of Layer 2. If you use your whistle in Layer 1, with a small cast time you will be sent back up to Orth. Moon whistles have to get back up to Layer 2, and Black whistles have to get back up to Layer 3. No big shortcuts out of Layer 5, again.

The whistle quests would ask for items specific to each layer, and ask for a decent amount to actually upgrade your whistle. This also means however you can't skip layers and get the resources somewhere else, if you use, say the custom Mob items with special tags. Collect enough of those, and potentially add in other quests to do other than mobs in the future (Such as collecting certain relics from relic spawn points) and you have a rank system.

The rank system needs to be something that can't be done easily between whistles. Going into Layer 1 and say, get silkfang silk and eyes. Easy, but it should be. Layer 2 should be harder, where you have to collect parts from a corpse weeper or crimson splitjaw. Then have it change in Layer 3 where you have to collect a LARGE amount of Madakojack scales and crimson splitjaw scales. In Layer 4 for the black whistle, you are required to not only kill Rohanas for their tails, but fight Orbbed Piercers and collect their items.

You could also implement something for the "Darker black whistle" in Layer 5, but only when more mobs are added in that are exclusive to Layer 5.

Each whistle allows you to use the elevators of the previous as well, you can go to Layer 2 as a Black whistle for example.

Would love feedback on this.

Also add in bonuses for having a certain whistle in Orth. Access to new shops with special blocks, special resource selling etc.

The hot topic we avoided was limiting players to not go beyond a certain layer while only being, say, a red whistle. We felt it would be too limiting to players, and only kept the requirements in each layer, encouraging players to stay in each layer before moving on instead of skipping ahead. Our idea is to have whistles make going up and down much easier, but you earn it.

this could be great, retexture the goat horn and change the sound. it could give you the glowing affect so people can see where you are
