Hoppers attached to a side of a machine that is configured for a sided inventory will always push anything into the inventory. GUIs also allow placing anything into inventories. Restrictions on machine inventory contents must be implemented to ensure

no pushing to output inventories
no items that can't be processed by the machine in input inventories

Cannot reproduce anymore, probably fixed at some point by accident.
