Can't run Samples.Mvc5 web project #490

So, I'm getting an error from Visual Studio when I try to debug the Samples.Mvc5 project.

It doesn't matter if I choose "IIS Express" or "IIS", or if I even try to run Samples.Mvc5.EFCore. I get the same error.

Yes, everything builds fine. The error happens right after the build.

I've researched this on the web, and I come across different issues, but the issue seems kind of rare. None of the fixes I've tried have worked so far.

It sounds like maybe you don't have the requires VS payloads installed, but I'm also not sure how to tell what the minimal set is for MiniProfiler at the moment.

Which version of Visual Studio are you using?

Let's try this slightly differently (much easier to compare), can you export your .vsonfig and post the JSON contents here? Here's how: image

It's a list of payloads I could easily diff and hopefully spot a missing piece :) If this is the issue (hoping so!) we can stick a .vsconfig in the root and VS will just prompt to install any missing bits for anyone in the future.

FYI:

On my computer, I have been using VS 2017 to run/debug a MVC5 web app for a long time now, both using IIS Express & regular IIS. So, it's weird that this isn't working.

Also, I tried to publish it locally, which worked. But when I went to the webpage I get an IIS error. Maybe I should start another issue, I don't know. The error, from the Error Logs, is:

Application 'MACHINE/WEBROOT/APPHOST/SAMPLES.MVC5.EFCORE' with physical root 'C:\Work\Websites\MiniProfiler\Samples.Mvc5.EFCore\' failed to start process with commandline 'dotnet .\Samples.Mvc5.dll', ErrorCode = '0x80004005' : 80008083.

When I run dotnet .\Samples.Mvc5.dll, I get:

A fatal error was encountered. The library 'hostpolicy.dll' required to execute the application was not found in 'C:\Work\Websites\MiniProfiler\Samples.Mvc5\'.
Failed to run as a self-contained app. If this should be a framework-dependent app, add the C:\Work\Websites\MiniProfiler\Samples.Mvc5\Samples.Mvc5.runtimeconfig.json file specifying the appropriate framework.

@chris10801080 All I can think of here is "try a repair on Visual Studio" if you're still having issues. Something is hosed with your install or cache (can try to nuke that via git clean -xfd) that I can't repro. I had several colleagues test it and they can't repro either :(

I have this same problem. I installed the latest version of the .Net Core SDK. I was just looking to quickly check out the samples and see how MiniProfiler works. Downloaded the repo, opened the .sln, set the Samples.MVC5 project or Samples.Mvc5.EFCore as startup and get this error. Samples.Console, Samples.ConsoleCore, Samples.AspNetCore2, Samples.AspNetCore3 all run without problems.

@madskristensen I've gotten a few reports of this (#556 as well) and I'm not sure the best way to find what VS component is missing for users here - do you have any suggestions on how we could track this down? I'd love to .vsconfig this and help all users, but we're at a loss as to what the difference is.

Since this hasn't come up again - chocking it up to an intermittent VS error (possibly in one install or release). If it comes up again, we can re-open and get to the right people but since it's not a library issue, going to close this out :)
