Further shrinking our MathJax deployment #29

Roman Cheplyaka blogged on reducing the size of self-hosted MathJAX. This is relevant to us because:

Hakyll takes ages to ensure that MathJax files didn't change;
Obnam (my backup program of choice) takes ages to verify that the files didn't change;
rsync takes quite a while to deploy the site.

These problems are caused by a huge number of small files that MathJax has. Reducing this number should help, and Roman's blog is all about this.

I should:

[x] re-acquaint myself with my MathJax config;
[x] decide if I still need PNG fonts (they seem to be the biggest source of small files);
[x] if I still want them, at least check if I can use spriting to turn them into one big file;
[ ] apply Roman's recipe.

According to our logs, there was 0 requests for MathJAX PNG files since the mid-November 2016, when I deployed them. They won't be missed, apparently.
