I think the default channel is nixpkgs when using nix standalone, but it is nixos when using NixOS. Maybe adding a comment to point this out could be useful.
Besides, if you use home-manager, I would recommend you to try nix-colors out. It exposes flavours' scheme functionalities in a way that makes more sense for declarative setups.
