lack of power/torque using hand throttle and 4wd giving more acceleration #364

Open miracleman51 opened 6 years ago

miracleman51 commented 6 years ago

Hi,

Loving the mod so far! However a couple of issues I have found. The first is that Im finding when using the hand throttle (to say 1800 rpm), the tractor does not have as much torque/power as when using say cruise control. the hand throttle should act as a rpm limiter but the engine should give the same torque/power up to that engine speed as far as Im aware/experienced.

the second is that when engaging 4wd, the tractor has better acceleration/power when road driving. I think technically it should be the other way around as IRL front wheels are at ~4% faster than the rear, so you would incur some power losses.

Im using GBmod with MR and drivecontrol if that helps.

Also, I have found that combine engines don't tend to sound quite as 'loaded' compared to tractors when at ~high load. I seem to remember GBmod in 2015 handled that quite well from memory, but i could be wrong.

Thanks!!

Matt

Hi Matt,

The latest version tries to have 5% faster front wheels. It sends most of the torque to the front wheels and brakes the rear wheels to achieve this.

OOoo, I hadn't actually thought you would implement that (I mentioned it more for the background to the experience I had with the lack of power with the only 2wd). But sounds very interesting!!!

Ive got some drilling to do and was thinking of ploughing up some grass meadows, so I'll give it a try tonight!

Thanks

Matt

Does it matter if Im using DriveControl 4wd etc or GBmod 4wd/diff locks?

I would say (using DC) from my preliminary testing that switch on 4wd doesn't give a 'speed boost' now which is good! and seems to provide slightly better traction!

I still find however that when using the hand throttle (how I have it setup anyway) still doesn't seem to give as much power as when you use the default cruise control. i.e. switch on cruise control give an audible increase in engine load and you get more speed.

For example if I have the engine limiter set to say 1900 rpm, but I'm in a gear which the engine is struggling to reach say 6mph and is at 1600 rpm, if I then engage cruise control (say set at 7mph) the tractor will speed up. Pretty sure the tractor should give the same torque for a give engine speed no matter what the rpm is set at?

Hi Matt,

Let's go through the questions/problems step by step:

  1. The first is that I'm finding when using the hand throttle (to say 1800 rpm), the tractor does not have as much torque/power as when using say cruise control... Yes, this could be. 1800 RPM with 2100 RPM rated are about 85%. So the vehicle will use 85% throttle. But cruise control will use 100% until the speed is reached. I propose to use the toggle function instead. The key combination is gearboxMogliKEEPSPEEDTOGGLE ("KEY_rctrl KEY_delete"). Now the throttle changes the cruise control speed. I tried the make it act like the joysticks on the right arm rest of modern tractors.

  2. The second is that when engaging 4wd, the tractor has better acceleration/power when road driving. Could this be related to traction?

  3. Also, I have found that combine engines don't tend to sound quite as 'loaded' compared to tractors GearboxAddon does the following: Under full load the engine RPM goes down but the volume increases.

  4. Does it matter if Im using DriveControl 4wd etc or GBmod 4wd/diff locks? Yes, the GearboxAddon implementation is different. DC 4wd just locks the middle differential at 100% and all wheels run at the same speed. GearboxAddon tries to distribute the torque between the axles to achieve about 5% faster front wheels.

Thanks for the reply Stefan.

  1. The throttle control (on modern tractors anyway) controls the engine governor, so you may set the rpm to a lower value (for example IRL the engine speed for running PTO driven equipment is say at 1900 rpm even if the rev limiter is at 2100), but the engine will still put out full power up until that engine speed, and try and keep to the set engine speed. It doesn't operate like a butterfly throttle on a car for example. IRL you don't run tractors at full engine speed to get full power as they have huge torque backup. For example, max power would be generated at 1800 rpm, max torque would be generated at 1500 rpm, but max engine speed would be 2100 rpm. I'll try what you suggest but Im not sure it works like I suggest. I think what you are referring to what happens with CVT where you can set a given speed and the ECU adjusts the engine and the CVT transmission. The weird thing is I actually felt you had the implementation that Im trying to explain in some earlier versions of GBmod - but I can't remember exactly which.
  2. Actually also related to the above I find that if you turn on a PTO driven implement, (in neutral) the engine speed will increase to say 1900 rpm (correct). However if you put it in gear, the tractor wont really move. so at the moment I am using hand throttle to increase the speed back to say 1900 rpm. This is where I find I get say 80% of tractor torque, whereas IRL the engine governor restricts the engine speed, but not the torque it produces for a given speed.
  3. possibly - Ill try without drive Control.
  4. Yes. It works pretty well! I just felt that the tractors also had a lower pitch under load as well, whereas the harvesters didn't. But that could just be my ears.
  5. Ah ok. Ill try that - it could make a difference to the behaviour I encountered with point 2

Thanks! Great work as always though. its a fantastic mod and really just makes the game for me. MR is really great, but I cant take a tractor simulator if it doesn't have gears and pretty much everything you have implemented.

Matt

Hi Matt,

The hand throttle problem should be fixed with 3.0 build 46.

Best regards, Stefan

miracleman51 commented 6 years ago

Yep that works well now. I think very low rev sound also seems better as well.

Thanks!!!

Mogli12 commented 6 years ago

Hi Matt,

ad 2. I think this is a problem of the clutch. If the clutch is below 100% it cannot transfer all available torque. But I adjusted it in v3.1 build 48 or 49. Please try.

Hi Mogli,

As an update, all seems to be working well now on that.. however recently I have been getting some crashes, where the game freezes when driving (in this case cultivating) Also when using the BB tractors and cultivators I get some wierd behaviour... although Im not sure if that is caused by GBmod. Ill do some more testing and get back to you.
