This is more of a design and presentation problem. How to help the inexperienced user without hiding other features or cluttering up the page(s). The brief intro paragraph on the Index Page should help. Also, from the big question mark on all pages, there could be a FAQ plus other help materials linked from there, such as "How to use a finding aid/guide" and the like. Example FAQ: "What's the difference between archival collections and library collections?"
SCOPE of the database
Let people know what they're looking through, what's in here, what's the scope, what can I do with it when I've "found" it.
Not sure how best to do this, but this is a good start, simply describing the content that's available. https://snccdigital.org/about/sncc-digital-gateway/ Content of the SNCC Digital Gateway website • Historic materials including documents, photographs, oral history interviews, and audiovisual material hosted in digital collections at repositories across the country • Profiles examining individuals’ contributions to the Movement • Events tracing the evolution of SNCC’s organizing • Inside SNCC pages unveiling the inner workings of SNCC as an organization • Our Voices sections presenting aspects of SNCC’s history from the eyes of the activists themselves • Map connecting users to the people who worked–and the events that happened–in a specific place
