See breadcrumbs.
Breadcrumbs are a must to show the user where they are in the map of the site itself. The BROWSER retains the browsing history, so that's not needed here.
What could be useful is the search term history and/or SERP results and DETAIL pages they've used. Amazon keeps a browsing history if you turn it on -- nice small content blocks on a long scroll page shows what you've looked at. For us, it would be useful if the user could mark items to be saved and viewed later like this.
TRACK your path
Track the user's pathway through search terms used; pages visited (?). NOTE: decided NOT to include any kind of browsing type history, because we'll let the browser do this work for us. The back button works as expected in any case, and the user can access their browsing history via browser menus.
Ability to click on a step along the way to go back to it. Breadcrumbs will allow the user to get back through the page hierarchies.
Maybe not as useful if there is an easy bookmarking feature. (With OR without login? Without is always better. But may need to warn the user that they'll disappear if tab closed, etc.) NO LOGINS. Too expensive to manage.
