https://researchworks.oclc.org/archivegrid/?q=fred+hampton+NOT+Lionel&p=1&ft=0 A fair example from ArchiveGrid. TABBED NAV offers two VIEWS of the search results: LIST (the usually found view) and SUMMARY. Oddly named --but it shows the search results BY FACET lists! This is great stuff, and not even too cluttered. https://researchworks.oclc.org/archivegrid/?q=fred+hampton+NOT+Lionel&p=1&ft=1 Detail page is good too: https://researchworks.oclc.org/archivegrid/collection/data/935539855
User testing for tabbed navigation clarity; plus optimum number of tabs.
NOTE: per John, tabs are content hiding devices, so NO TABS!
Start over button vs. New search vs. retain query until user chooses a "Browse by" option in the nav bar, or they enter a new query in the search box.
Without a "Start Over" button or similar, it is a good idea to offer a "Search within" so that the scope of the query is clear.
Leaving off the "Start Over" button to simplify the interface.
Offering a "Back to Search Results" nav with arrows could help user go from Finding Aid to SERP. (See Chicago Collections site.) Query is still shown in the search box (and possibly also above the facets Sidebar, along with the selected facet terms). The breadcrumb should be labelled clearly also to help with this back and forth flow.
What to include? and How to display?
Snippets from MarkLogic across the board. Check. 3-11-2021: not going to use snippets, as they don't work well with XML files as a source. Will use XPath to retrieve abstract|bioghist|scopecontent notes, up to a few sentences long.
Click on the title as a link to get to the detailed search result object. Go back if you want to look more. Query is retained when going to the detailed record, AND when hitting back button to go to previous work on search refinements.
Query shows up inside the search box, showing what you just searched on. SERP could also display total hits + your search query at the top left of the SERP in larger font. User can blow away previous work on search query refinements by entering a new search and hitting Enter.
hitting the "Start Over" button on the SERP page.... (OR on the detail page too...)
