Make an option to create italic font but when used as bold #181

What feature are you proposing?

Hello,

Visual Studio only allows the font to be bold as customization. Would it be possible to create a special version where italic is the bold attribute, so we have italic when we use it in Visual Studio as bold attribute activated.

Can you add some screenshots from Visual Studio preferences? How do they apply it? I fear the problem might be that then we'll replace each bold with italic.

I noticed they allow feature requests so I would send one to them as well so they could improve their font customization options.

Hello @bebraw

Thank you for taking your time to answer this quest, but what do you mean by replace each bold with italic? I've added a picture on how visual studio looks like from the font and color dialog

appearance visual studio 2022

A bit more explanation on how it works.

You can choose the font you want to use, but only change the color and boldness for each of the listed items.

Comments would then be colorized.

I also took the time to make a feature request for Visual Studio as per your suggestions.

Ok, I think I understand now. Since we can do replacements already, maybe what you propose is doable but I cannot give any guarantee when.

We had a quick discussion about this. We cannot commit to doing the feature short term as there are many other improvements to do.

That said, if many people show interest in the issue by +1:ing it and there's general interest, it will bump the priority of the issue.

As mentioned, ideally the developers of Visual Studio would be kind enough to add an Italic toggle to allow easy access to the italic variants of typefaces.

Do you know other fonts doing this type of replacement?

bundgaard commented 1 year ago

@bebraw No I haven't looked if other fonts provide this feature.

As long this feature is in your backlog, then I can just hope more people see this as something they want.
