Creative technology is blah blah blah
blah blah this is an answer.
That is so interesting @mmusick. I agree with you on blah, but......
1.What is creative coding: It is a way of expressing artistic way through coding.
2 Is creating technology an art form: just like sketching is art involving pencils and painting involves paints, so is creative coding an art form, and technology is the utensil that help produce it.
3 How do you see Creative Technology fitting into the larger trends and flows of art: In regards to art the hardest thing for an artist, in my opinion, is taking is what they see inside and expressing it to the upmost perfection in the physical world. I think creative technology will continue to evolve until it can show just exactly what the artist is seeing inside themselves.
Your answer to number three i think sums it up to a T @ChristopherAWarchesiak. It is amazing just how much it has become apart of our day to day lives. I look forward to seeing how much more intricate it becomes.
How do you see Creative Technology fitting into the larger trends and flows of art? Technology is progressing so quickly. With this quick progression, we as artists will continue to have more ways of expressing ourselves. From 3D printing to VR technology, the future looks bright for creative technology!
What is the relationship today between science and art? Science and art go hand in hand. We must have the stability and practicality of science to allow us to actually create the amazing works of art that we come up with.
What is the historical relationship between science and art? Science is an art and always has been. Though historically I think creatives and the scientists were seen as very different, they have always shared a curiosity about the world around them.
@aenielsen I think that you summed up the answer to question four in a much more concise and meaningful manner than I could have. Cheers!! Considering question five, I think there was some constraint in the past in creativity, as science itself was limited by the politics of the world; for example, only certain forms of expression were legitimized by society. I hope we have grown beyond that at this point. The leaps in science have been growing at such an astonishing rate the ability to create without accepted boundaries has also increased.
@aenielsen & @JonSwallow I agree with both your answers to questions 4 and 5. Art and science go hand-in-hand. For either field, there needs to be an element of creativity in order for any advancement to take place. Art is always pushing the boundaries to be "more," as in more creative, more innovative, and more unique. Science follows in those same footsteps as it grows to be "more" as well. With new art, comes more creative innovation to expand our scientific fields, and as science advances, new techniques and pathways are discovered that lend themselves to the creation of art.
Is Creative Technology or Creative Coding an 'art form'? Yes, Creative Technology or Creative Coding is an art form because it utilizes creativity to create. It is essentially a different medium in which to produce a creative piece of work.
How do you see Creative Technology fitting into the larger trends and flows of art? Again, as creative coding is essentially a different medium in which to produce a piece of work, Creative Technology will advance the trends and flows of art in a way that enhances the idea of aesthetic beauty. It allows for a more encompassing definition of what it means to create and appreciate different forms of art, and it also allows for more experimentation to blend different mediums.
What is the historical relationship between science and art? Science and art have always been seen as opposites, but they are actually 2 sides of the same coin. Both fields push boundaries to explore the unknown and to open up new possibilities to the world, and both fields have experienced backlash because of their pushing. Though science seems more technical than art, both use forms of precision and measurement in their production.
Creative coding is programming, or coding that is used to express art in various digital forms. For instance, the expressive coding can be used to create unique visuals for music, a function for a video game, etc.
I believe creative coding is an art form because I believe art is anything that is creatively produced and is meant to be an expression that originates from the artist. Art can be anything you can see, hear or possibly even feel i suppose. It doesn't matter whether an artist uses a paint brush, pencil or computer to create that expression.
A media artist creates many different kinds of purposeful art for things like advertising, video games, music videos, and many other things by using technology. A creative technologist specifically understands both the technical and creative processes to coding.
@alexanderlik Your answer to question six is really in depth and definitive. Your specific examples not only serve to prove your point but drives it home, as it forces the reader to visualize. I do not think that it would be possible to more clearly explain the historical connection between art and science. That is the kind of answer that really wakes a person up and draws them into the subject. You have a talent there. Cheers!
What is "creative technology" or "creative coding"? Creative coding is a computer program that allows the user to create an expressive piece rather than a functional piece, meaning that a user can create art using a digital code rather than the stroke of a paintbrush.
Is Creative Technology or Creative Coding an 'art form'? I would argue yes, creative coding is an artform due to the time and energy it takes a programmer to create something. The programmer is using his creativity to share his idea with the world and make it a reality.
What is the relationship today between science and art? Science and art have both always been reaching farther and farther as to what can be done. Each area continues to push the boundaries of human ingenuity and spirit. What is the historical relationship between science and art?
@alexanderlik My man! Making science not dry using art to help people learn for your answer to number 5 really intrigued me. If we could use art and science together to push the boundaries, what may we come across I wonder?
@JonSwallow I couldn't agree more that science and art flourish together as a cohesive unit. You can't have one without the other.
2. Creative Technology/Creative Coding IS an innovative art form that in my opinion is, and has been for some years now, the next in a line of natural progressions that ART of many forms has and will continue to follow. I’m sure that as level of sophistication of our technologies and coding forms progress. The opportunity for expression through art will grow; likewise, I’m sure that with this progression we will see more forms art incorporated into the mix.
4. I see the Creative Technologies we now possess advance in sophistication in a similar path and at a similar speed, like that of our analytical computation technologies in the past two or three decades. With this tech having reached a significant enough level to allow for the proper expression in art, we’ve been seeing a vast innovation by artists in recent years, incorporating more and more forms of art. It’s our insatiable need to express ourselves that will drive the trend and will only be held back by the ability of our tech and our coding platforms. Personally, I wholly believe we are at the beginning of an art renascence that will simply blow people’s minds.
5. Science has always been closely connected with every aspect of our lives throughout history. With every major innovation in science we’ve seen a surge in our society. Art is no different. Advances in technology gives us more and more abilities to express our artistic vision even to the point where advances meant for other areas of our world are incorporated into artistic expression. Only the imagination of our artistic community limits use.
@allenharguess701 I never thought of now being on the cusp of a new art renaissance but I think you are on to something! Its now obvious with creative coding artists are creating amazing new kinds of art everyday.
A media artist is someone who uses Media for art. An example would be a magazine front cover, it is an art form in and of its self. And I would say it depends solely on the medium if the two are the same.
The world in which we live is becoming ever more dependent on technology. This shift to dependency will see a small boom of art as first a counter culture before most art becomes digital or computer made
@allenharguess701 I have to say I agree with you on the renaissance but I believe we will see a counter renaissance in the form of the current status quo wanting to keep modern art the standard.
Creative Coding is using programs and code to create Art in a digital form, without having to use a paintbrush or a pen or pencil
Yes. Creative Coding is an art form. It allows you to express yourself digitally through our constantly evolving technology
Our scientific advancements have allowed us to be able to do things we never thought imaginable, and art is no different. From interactive art installations to video games, new forms of art are popping up as we become more scientifically and technologically advanced.
@AWatersFall17 I like your two sides of the same coin point. Although they seem like opposites, they are both just trying to push the boundaries of what can be done, and both benefit from the other progressing.
@Benji0130 I agree with your point about the time and effort the programmer puts into his coding. If someone is passionate enough about something to put the time and effort into it to make it an art form, it, in my eyes, is art.
What is "creative technology" or "creative coding"? Creative coding is writing code to create an algorithm that will output art. This can be written to create symmetrical shapes or it can be at random to create something more abstract. This code can be written to change based on it's environment. For example, it can be written to video a person and paint a portrait depending on who is standing in front of the camera.
Is Creative Technology or Creative Coding an 'art form'? Creative coding is an art form that combines technology and art to create something. This can span from a simple algorithm that creates a drawing to a video game that has perfect 3D details. In the end the output is the expression of the artist with the tool being code instead of a traditional tool like a paint brush.
What is the relationship today between science and art? There is a very strong relationship today between science and art. As science and technology improves then art also involves. Innovative artists like to find ways to use science to find their means to create art. With technology art continues to involve. Even the most basic apps on smart phones have made it easier to create art.
What is the historical relationship between science and art? There has always been a close relationship with science and art. Imaginative artists have invented technologies just to create art. The camera being one of the biggest inventions that was made solely to take artist photographs. This then turned into the motion picture by taking rapid photographs. Artists are always finding new ways to express themselves and science will always continue to drive that forward.
@MikeStevens1161 I never considered that technology helps artist create something more life like and helps project exactly what they are seeing. Great point!
@alexanderlik I like that you mention how historical scientific drawings are now seen as art. Even anatomical drawings of organs have an artistic and almost romantic feel to them. Do you think 100+ years from now things we see as scientific will be art? For instance, the code that we are going to write in this class.
@rachel-holton-burnett I agree that even basic applications have made it much easier for artists to create and share art. It makes me very excited to see what might happen in the near future to make our jobs even better!
A creative technologist is much more defined than media artist, since you are using technology to create your kind of art, which could be a video, song, image or graphic. The difference is up to each individual, since a media artist could be a creative technologist. But creative technologists could not be like some other media artists who use newspaper, glue and sawdust as their medium.
I think its the other way around. Art needs to flow and trend more into the concepts of technology and creative technology, accepting a whole new spectrum of artwork and reinterpreting those relatively new art forms, into something entirely new once more. Creative technology is much more integrated into our lives than we often think or want to believe, and art doesn't seem to recognize or embrace it as much as it should.
Science and art are often seen as complete opposites, science being rugged, structural and following a hierarchy of rules and regulations. Art on the other hand is often represented as being very liberal in ideas and almost chaotic in nature. I think that both of those statements can be true, and sometimes are, but why should they? I don't think I'm keen on coding yet, but It seems to me you can have a lot of freedoms in your workflow and a lot of individuality in each persons ability to code. The same works for art, you can keep your artwork free flowing, chaotic or without rules. Or you can set your own boundaries, regulate yourself to a specific task to achieve a certain outcome for your artwork.
In conclusion I would say that both science and art are seen as very different concepts, but in reality are much more similar to each other than we are lead to believe.
Cheers.
@levigoddard I agree with your statement about our society becoming more dependent on technology. especially within developed countries in both the west and the east, more and more people rely on the technologies made to move forward in their lives. Although, I don't think most art will become digital or computermade anytime soon. There are still many forms of art you can't properly rely through a screen like theatricals or other live installations.
@rachel-holton-burnett I wouldn't say your answer to question number one is wrong, but perhaps it could be broader than an algorithm that creates art in of itself. Perhaps an artist could start coding with the code itself representing the art as an image or maybe even abstract poetry, but that's just an example.
@MikeStevens1161
Perfectly sums it up simply
Creative coding is where computer coding is used create works of digital art. In a way, it's kind of like making your computer your art canvas, where your coding abilities are your art utensils.
I would generally consider creative coding to be an form of art. I mean, I consider music, cuisine, and fashion all forms of art. And based on experience, anything can be a form of art, whether it’s hand-drawn or crafted in a program like, Photoshop. So why not coding? As a matter of fact, I am looking forward to see how this comes into play throughout the semester.
Based on what I have viewed, creative technology has allowed us to dive deeper into new possibilities for art, and how to further expand our creativity and imagination, as media artists. I don’t need to say anything else, because that about answers the question in my own words.
This depends on how you define 'art' but to close off avenues of expression is negligent on the part of any artist. For me, art is anything recognized by the viewer as eliciting a reaction. But the item must have intent. Without the intent of presenting something as art, a block of wood is just a block of wood. A string of code is just code.
Creative coding creates new avenues for artistic expression. Broadening the manner an artist can present their work, present their ideas (making the work), and interact (perhaps more directly) with the artist's viewers. For instance the UCGallery has an installation right now involving a multimedia presentation using an Arduino in conjunction with sensors and a projected display. The artist uses the technology to help further their artistic expression and broaden their language in a way they would otherwise be unable to do.
Science and art are slowly becoming closer. Artists are in some ways more free to explore scientific topics and often present the results in an interesting and engaging manner. But even in areas like sculpture and ceramics, art requires scientific information and methods. Sculptures use physics properties and ceramics is heavily involved with chemistry. While still including an expressive method and creative thought processes.
@alexanderlik your response to question six is right on the money! Art and science have always been intertwined, and your examples help support that claim. Particularly Da Vinci, who is thought of as one of the greatest artists in history, has much of his art rooted in science.
@AWatersFall17 your response to question two is a very valid point. That technology is expanding the means of expression and opening up new mediums is such an important thing in today's world, where originality is key and horizons are constantly expanding.
Yes, I would consider creative coding and creative technology to be an art form. Although whether or not to consider it as art may depend on the person reacting to the creations. As people have been discussing in this issue, many people, myself included, view DaVinci's technical drawings as art. But someone who is more 'scientifically' minded may view them as supplemental educational material. Personally, I find anything made creatively and beautifully to be art. This makes art and science fairly intertwined in my experience.
How do you see Creative Technology fitting into the larger trends and flows of art?
New technology has always progressed art. A major example of this is the progression of film. New creative technology has made art more accessible to everyone and broadened to scope of what a modern artist may be.
What is the relationship today between science and art?
Science and art are incredibly interconnected today. The tools available to artists have expanded their capabilities. There has been a huge upswing of technology recently and we have entered a digital age that has provided so much access to artists. More than that, art has always positively effected science as well. Designers can take technology and make it beautiful. Pushes to find new technologies to create entertainment have also expanded the scientific realm. Science and art are intertwined in the human experience.
@lbecker137 I think it's great that you point out how helpful technology has been to artists, and also how art has made technology better. Technology continues to get more aesthetically pleasing, while at the same time it also becomes more powerful. What a time to be alive!
Question 1: Creative coding and creative technology are tools that allow creative minds to use algorithms and formulas to skip some of the "tedious" processes of creation and create interesting graphical artwork. I say tedious only because that's how it was stated, not because I find any part of the creative process tedious. Quite the contrary, I find every part of it important and engaging.
Question 2: Of course! Why would it not be an art form? Everything involved in the coding process can be considered an art form, as it is creation, regardless of what language you use. From games, to art, to websites, you're creating something from scratch, and that's an art form in itself.
Question 4: This... Is a difficult question for me to answer. In just the aspects of creative coding, it's an important part of our current art trends. Creating games and art through code and formulas may become the norm, and that, that terrifies me somewhat. Not so much for game design, but for traditional art, well, I feel that as time goes on, more art that is passed off as "abstract" or any other variation of the word flows into our world, art that has some kind of meaning, but often, is meaningless or vapid. I'm someone who believes in much of the traditional aspects of art, drawing in pencil, painting, using more than just shapes to convey feeling. As much as coding and Creative Technology helps, I prefer to do my things in an expressive manner using characters, and hate to take shortcuts.
@JakeTheFlare You're exactly like me, perceiving many different forms of creation as art. I respect that in a person!
@lbecker137 It's definitely true that art evolved around technology, yet, I find that some of that evolution scares me, just a bit. There are no shortcuts to quality, and there are a few examples, like pre-rendered introduction templates on YouTube, that act simply as crutches, shortcuts, or alternatives to working hard on your own creations.
What is "creative technology" or "creative coding"? Web projects, mobile apps and other digital experiences that a person creates through technology. New concepts and ideas are explored similar to the artistic process but this experience is more media, advertising, and other creative industries based.
Is Creative Technology or Creative Coding an 'art form'?
Absolutely! Yes, it is completely different from the art produced even since the beginning of man. But it is still a creative process. It's just animated and created through technology. Many people would argue that animated art isn't art at all due to the fact it was done by a robot. But that logic is flawed. My computer is my tool. Just as your paintbrush is your tool. Different, but still a tool. The art is created by me, and I am using my tool to create it.
@william-wohlman I completely agree. Without intent and purpose art isn't art at all.
@MikeStevens1161 I agree, I too think that art will continuously evolve to show exactly what we have created within ourselves.
@hlorraine I think that you are absolutely right on both ends. Exactly how I would've answered them. Mobile apps and web projects would certainly be considered as digital art, and animation would also be considered art since the actual human being is doing all the hard work.
@HansOlo43 How observant of you. That's just about how I see creative coding, and I agree that with science and art both constantly evolving together, we can become more imaginative.
@william-wohlman I think you bring up a good point about the definition of "art" and how loosely it can be interpreted.
@william-wohlman , i totally agree. And as always you explain it in such a fine manor.
@mjohnson92 I really liked how you answered number 2. Everything that you wrote expresses how I feel art should be perceived. That whether it's online or in person, art can be whatever you want it to be and I really thought the way you explained it can help other people understand what "art" really is.
@rachel-holton-burnett your answer to number 4 made me really think. When I looked through the questions, I couldn't figure out a way that science and art could coincide, but when you explained about the camera and motion picture, and how people had to create that in order to create art, it made me realize that I wasn't thinking hard enough.
@JonSwallow I like your answer for number 3. The creative technologist can definitely make art more applicable to real world situations.
