Questions about Creative Technology

Please respond to this issue, discussing at least three of these questions. As your classmates respond, you should come back, at least one more time, and respond directly to them!

  1. What is "creative technology" or "creative coding"?

  2. Is Creative Technology or Creative Coding an 'art form'?

  3. What is a Media Artist? And, what is the difference, if any, between a media artist and creative technologist?

  4. How do you see Creative Technology fitting into the larger trends and flows of art?

  5. What is the relationship today between science and art?

  6. What is the historical relationship between science and art?

mprimeau1 commented 5 years ago

@EmileeK Yeah I totally think that virtual reality and apps are a massive way that people can use creative coding and art.

Daniellechard commented 5 years ago

@mprimeau1 You have a great point in that coding will become more and more necessary as virtual reality technology becomes more popular as we push the limits of science and art as we as human beings have always done since the beginning of time. It is truly exciting to wonder where technology will go from here and what we will see next.

Daniellechard commented 5 years ago

@EmileeK I don't know if you have heard about augmented reality technology but it is very similar to virtual reality. I think this is another big area where creative coding and technology will really take off and reach new heights.

What is "creative technology" or "creative coding"?

Creative coding is the use of computer programming and technology to create visual art.

How do you see Creative Technology fitting into the larger trends and flows of art?

I see creative technology as the driving force behind new kinds of performance art which is interactive, resulting in pieces that viewers and creators alike can participate in. I think the trend of combining art with technology will result in an art world that's more progressive and more welcoming to outsiders who see a traditional museum space as stuffy and intimidating. I think the rise of tech like VR is going to further unite art and science/technology.

What is the relationship today between science and art?

I think the relationship between science art is being explored richly today, to the benefit of both fields. I'm really interested in this combination in animation and gaming, both of which seem to advance by leaps and bounds every year. One of my favorite examples of art and science meeting are the graphs posted on the subreddit "dataisbeautiful". People combine art and the data they've compiled into beautiful charts and displays.

What is the historical relationship between science and art?

When I think about the history of the relationship between science and art, I think of the old masters, "renaissance men" like DaVinci. Art was inextricable from science for him. He studied from life to create art that helped him learn about nature and human biology. Historically, art was used to document reality in the time before photographs, so art and science were intertwined by necessity.

@alexisgood17

I totally agree with your statement that any work involving expression can be considered art. I think expression being the benchmark for considering something a work of art is very helpful.

chloeortega commented 5 years ago

2. Is Creative Technology or Creative Coding an 'art form'? I believe that creative technology/creative coding is an art form that can be used to create beautiful pieces of expression, and that’s what any type of art form is supposed to do, to get the audience to feel something. These have ushered in artists that now can create something to immerse their audience into their imagination using such things as virtual reality and augmented reality. I think that any type of art form will constantly evolve.

3. What is a Media Artist? And, what is the difference, if any, between a media artist and creative technologist? A media artist is an artist that takes advantage of the expanding technologies to create their work using applications such as Photoshop and Illustrator. A creative technologist seems to be more involved in the technical designing of their ideas using codes/algorithms. Maybe there is a small difference between the two but they both use technology to create their expressions of art.

5. What is the relationship today between science and art? In today’s world I believe that the relationship of science and art is perceived to be more intertwined than it has been before especially with the advancements in technology. They both are exploring some aspect and want to reach their audience with their expression of a conclusion, whether that be data collected on a survey represented through a pie chart or a piece of art created from information. They are not the same nor are they completely different, I think now we are more aware that they can complement each other.

chloeortega commented 5 years ago

@mprimeau1 I agree with your idea that creative technology will continue to expand in areas like Virtual Reality and the expansion leading to creative solutions to problems. Let’s say for instance a language that is slowing being lost, instead of writing books we could make an avatar that is programmed with the language and is able to be used generations from now to teach.

chloeortega commented 5 years ago

@laurenfordham I agree that art would seem to be at somewhat of a stand still if technology had not been incorporated, technology made a huge impact in the arts world. Art was always going to evolve and be expanded upon, with technology it is making it easier for an artist work to reach a wider audience.

EmileeK commented 5 years ago

@chloeortega I totally agree that with the advancements of technology we can see science and technology becoming more intertwined then ever before, and that we use both the reach audience daily.

EmileeK commented 5 years ago

@TNGlenn I agree that with the rise of VR it with further unite science/technology and art. We are continuously making advancements in VR that always us to be immersed and participate in games and etc, and in it will only increase in the future of what can be achieved by using both which is exciting.

  1. What is "creative technology" or "creative coding"? Creative technology or coding to me is technology or coding used for the purpose of creating or experiencing something that would have been difficult or impossible to experience without the use of technology and creative input. As technology advances so do artistic possibilities.

  2. Is Creative Technology or Creative Coding an 'art form'? Yes. I believe technology and art are both very broad and each contains elements of the other that cannot be fully separated. Creative Coding and Technology are advanced forms of art that build off of previous technology and make it possible to experience art in new and different ways.

  3. How do you see Creative Technology fitting into the larger trends and flows of art? Creative Technology seems to be driving the development of many new forms of art. As more people understand the power that technology has to create amazing works of art, more artists are adapting to use new technologies or modify existing technology for new artistic purposes. I think art and technology will become even more closely related as time goes on, and they will always contribute to each others' growth.

cassadys commented 5 years ago

@laurenfordham I also think that science is art. It is a form of self expression and a way to understand your world in new ways.

cassadys commented 5 years ago

@TNGlenn I like what you said about new technology and art combining to be more welcoming to outsiders. I think it is going to be great to see where technology and art go from here.

laurenfordham commented 5 years ago

@TNGlenn I most definitely agree with what you're saying about history and art. It's crazy to see the comparison to modern day scientists as opposed to olden day. I think today without art, science would have more issues, because they wouldn't have a physical aspect to rely on.

laurenfordham commented 5 years ago

@chloeortega I love your view on the art form; that it makes you feel something! I agree 1000000% I think had this been a question in older times (considering if they actually had these resources) the answer would not be so simple. Today we consider self expression as an art form and I love that. So coding to me is an art form, although it may be different in an expressive art of physicality, it is still an art. I think a lot of people think of art as a painting or drawing and never go beyond the realm of physical art.

kaedinlsrosling commented 5 years ago
  1. Creative coding is a type of programming, that is more "creative" or expressive than practical.

  2. I think creative coding is an art form, because I believe that anything that requires talent is an art form. From athletics to dance, and cooking to computer science.

  3. A media artist is an artist who creates new media technologies, including graphics, animations, and digital and virtual art. Personally I do not think there is a difference between a media artist and creative technologist, because they both use technology in creative ways. They both explore how hardware and software are used in creating all kinds of art forms.

kaedinlsrosling commented 5 years ago

@EmileeK I completely agree with your thought of creative coding being an art form. I never tried to relate it to a form of expression and your imagination, but I thought your point of view was interesting.

kaedinlsrosling commented 5 years ago

@chloeortega I thought your point of view on the relation of art and science was and interesting aspect. I really liked how you explained how they complement each other.
