Yeah, I've seen this one and also wanted to implement it in my map (before I started this project). However, we don't really have to go this complicated (and we can't). The users can upload their own images and therefore it can be hex, squares, etc. It would be much simpler to just display the actual indicator (disregarding the grid) and let the DM decide if it hit the target or not.
