I watched the Balinese aggressively selling off all their land in 2010-2011.
Now they whine that the foreigners "took" their land. But the real truth is, the Balinese sold out.
She is still recoverable...
A very beautiful island.
But right now, parts of the island serve as a case study in GREED. Greedy tourists, greedy long term foreigners, greedy locals milking the tourists, greedy Balinese property developers, greedy local government, greedy politicians.
Few of the locals take true responsibility.
All of the above demographics have become severely embarrassed over the past 5-10 years. As it has become apparent to the world that they have collaborated to turn Bali into a mechanized Disneyland.
You are dealing with the Indonesian "Spiritual Upper Classes", a group of people who have never been told what to do, and never had restrictions placed on them. Some of them are still haughty and supercilious, even as they put the boot into the spirit of Bali.
The locals all spin a sob story, and say.. "I just need riiiicccee for my fffammmly".
Fair enough... but if that's the case... and they're broke... why are so many of them so FAT?
Right now, it looks like the Gods are using Bali as an example to the rest of Indonesia. This is what happens when you sell out.
I have hope that the situation can be fixed... but the last thing we need is someone else killing a rice field so they can live the dream.
