Can I use 70% alcohol for alcohol stove? I've never tried 50%, but have done 70%. It will burn, but a good deal of the heat goes towards evaporating the water and is wasted. The 91% alcohol will burn fairly well and if it significantly cheaper than methanol or denatured, go for it.

Hard Apple Cider is definitely the easiest way to go. There is a recipe on HomeBrewTalk that is very popular as it's extremely easy to make. Essentially you get red wine yeast and mix it with 5 Gallons of store bought apple juice and 2 pounds of dextrose. You need a carboy and an airlock, but that's it.
