The time when working in a call center was a taboo, and people had all kind of misconceptions around the industry and people working in them. I started from smaller call centers in NCR selling mobile phones for a year, then worked with Convergys Gurgaon and Microsoft Bangalore as a technical support professional.

On contrary to general perception, BPO Industry was blessing in disguise for youth of India. Not only it opened employment options for a huge population, it was one of the most dynamic industry, with rapidly changing work environment, process compliance and above all corporate culture. The culture only accessible to graduates from IIT/IIM was suddenly open to undergrads, 10+2 etc.

I still remember collecting old Times of India newspaper from my landlord, reading it loud in front of the bathroom mirror to improve my English and confidence to get my first call center job back in 2001. I was from a middle class family, which was facing financial issues due to 3 kids going to University at the same time. While doing my BE, I needed some financial support and only decent paying option that won’t affect my studies were the call centers as they operated during night (American daytime).

Once I got in it was a great feeling, the gigantic Convergys Atria (or Atariya building as cab drivers used to say) was my first MNC office. I used to feel like Bill gates walking into office to support Microsoft and then I personally saw Steve Ballmer (MS-CEO), I was over the moon. A engineering student who used to get Rs.1000 as monthly expenses was now making Rs. 20000. Flashing a MNC employee badge, having a Microsoft e-mail address and having office parties at Mojos were things people couldn’t see in their dreams. The 3-Week voice and accent training, where our great trainers made sure we could speak like westerners (“There was a time when people really had a way with words….” became the most favored lines for 3 weeks of our life, its the Convergys anthem), we were trained in most capable and competitive environments by world-class trainers. The passing rates were very low due to high benchmarks set by reputed clients (Fortune 500)

The most important change in an introvert person like me was that I became talkative in matter of few months. I was able to speak to new people from all walks of life with utmost confidence. The college Viva’s which earlier used to suck life out of me were more like a discussion, I was acing them and winning over my professors and everyone around me.

Suddenly, 18–20 year olds like me were being taught world’s most advanced work culture, operational processes, compliance and overall business models for world’s biggest corporations which IIM grads seek exposure to, the six-sigma’s and continuous improvement were the new norms. Though neither everyone understood it fully nor they cared about it. But those who cared, learnt and grew quickly and by the time they completed their degrees (20-22) they were already team-leads and managers making Rs 50k a month

The social acceptance was a big issues in early 2000’s, my landlord used to think I was some kind of criminal as I was working night shifts, he assumed we did something nasty when he saw young girls and boys packed in Sumo’s n Qualis. He confronted me few times as to why I couldn’t do anything decent that finished by dinner time and finally asked me to vacate. My classmates thought I was a Gigolo and every night I was going out with a new girl, I can only assume the treatment my female colleagues would have got. I had one engineering classmate who did not marry his longtime girlfriend as his family won’t accept a girl working in call center. But then narrow-mindedness was always part of Indian society, the independent thinking was only good at cinema theaters.
