What will happen in your session?

A cross-disciplinary exploration of choreography & (web)code. By ‘rehearsal’ it is meant a sort of temporary stage for experimenting with web design tools which follow choreographic methods and thematic concerns. This format is very similar to a workshop, open to any participants curious to explore the use of choreographic techniques to generate new modes of thinking composition, participation, relations and articulations between bodies and web technologies. Traditionally, a rehearsal is a built in process, a space-time for developing ideas acknowledging unpredictable results. Another important point about the ‘ rehearsal series’ is to break the distancing between mind/body, self/other, subject/object, discovery/invention. Enhancing the idea of process over product: processes of becoming, becoming structures, becoming codes and scripts. Read more: http://joanachicau.com/rehearsal_series.html

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

— How can we move away from pre-choreographed environments and move towards building our own choreographies?

This workshop aims at providing a space and time for the exploration of the use of choreographic techniques as a way to reflect and find alternative paths towards the use of tools, systems of visuality, accessibility, and distribution of information in the web.

The outcome is a piece of ‘choreographic code' - participants are invited to contribute to the code by translating the ideas discussed in the session into a new shared vocabulary. The workshop will privilege the use of Floss and focus mainly on web programming. Notions of live coding practices within web programming will also be introduced.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

One projector; HDMI cable; Loudspeakers; Connection to wi-fi . Participants should bring their own laptops and comfortable clothes.

Time needed

90 mins

Hello @JoBCB! This looks really interesting. A few questions for now:

JoBCB commented 5 years ago

hi @jontutcher ! Great to hear from you, I hope I am still on time to answer your questions:

01 Yes, it can be flexible, and I will bring my own laptop which can be used both for the presentation and for a set of collective exercises > which can follow the "mob" style - having one person typing and switch roles among the participants.

02 Yes, the session can be adapted to 60 minutes if necessary.

03 This methodology is part of an ongoing research which aims at empowering the construction of common and inclusive choreographies within digital media spheres and the apparatus at work. It uses choreographic concepts as 'scores' for writing coding 'scripts'. The latter can be a response to online websites/ search engines, after inspecting them; and making use of the web-console as a means for re_organ_ising HTML structures often experienced as habitual, static, fixed. Overall looking into the anatomies of webpages as part of an aesthetic process which informs political ones, vice-versa. And how different choreographic strategies may further inform the emergence of new poetics [**] within computation. The rehearsal series are a time-space for diverse voices to re-think existing web systems and languages, with all of its properties, designed intentions, ideologies.

[*] beyond the cartesian divide: < head > and < body >. [**] "the activity in which a person brings something into being that did not exist before." ( = Poiesis is etymologically derived from the ancient Greek term ποιεῖν, which means "to make". ) source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poiesis

04 I believe general understanding of computer programming and coding languages is a good basis for discussing and engaging in short collective/ group exercises.

When will I know if my workshop will be part of the MozFest program?

Thank you for taking the time to submit a session to MozFest.

Due to the high level of submissions, we’re unable to accept all proposals and unfortunately, your session was not part of the final group.

You'll receive a follow up email from us in the next few days.
