What will happen in your session?

I will explain why I consider that the Internet is a medium with many benefits for literacy, inclusion and training for the Deaf. Second, I will explain the Project: web workshops by the means of Mexican Sign Language on different topics that I have found that the Mexican Deaf Community is interested in: language, history and how to make an organic garden. Finally, I will summarize the session defending that the internet takes part in the improvement of education in communities with more educational backwardness and social exclusion. This is the case of the Mexican Deaf Community.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

This session provides solutions for social exclusion. It proposes a bridge between the internet and the inclusion of monoritarian communities in poverty at majority. Its success is based on extensive research on the Deaf and their needs, finding on the Internet benefits for their educational and social development.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

I will need an interpreter of sign language in the case of the video be recorded or there be deaf persons attending the session.

Time needed

less than 60 mins

I really like this session, it could give some valuable insight into improving accessibility for deaf users, my only concern is that I'm not sure we can find a sign language interpreter.

itzelmv commented 5 years ago

Dear Ryan Warsaw I highly appreciate your kind comment. This next contact could be of help to find available interpreter of sign language. She is the secretary of the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), with connections to interpreters worldwide. I had the honor of knowing and exposing the research to this magnificent organization in 2016. Thus, they are informed about my research: Itzel Moreno PhD. from Barcelona University. Please find below the data of this contact. I also would love to help into contacting the interpreter of sign language. I think there are two options: could be an interpreter of International Sign System or an interpreter of British Sign Language. Maybe it is easier to find the second one. I also would like to ask if you are interested in an interpreter of American Sign Language. If so, www.ASLServices.com could be of help. The WFD contact is: Ms Phillipa Sandholm Administrative Secretary, World Federation of the Deaf WFD Secretariat PO Box 65 FIN-00401 Helsinki, Finland Mobile: (sms/Whats App): +358 50 331 1059

Thank you so much for your interest, I keep attentive, Best regards, Itzel.

@MozillaFestival/2018-production, this session will need an interpreter of sign language.

Saallen commented 5 years ago

We can help with that- @marcwalsh will reach out

itzelmv commented 5 years ago

Thank you so much for the support to Sign Language in order to achieve language inclusion of Deaf people whose language is the Sign Language. In countries with less development, Sign Language is also their only means of communication since they do not access to other professional and constant means of communicative support. Therefore, my sincerely gratitude for your support.

Hey @itzelmv, the Web Literacy team has reviewed your session and we think it's great! We have a question regarding your stipend request: will you be able to attend the festival in the event that we do not have a stipend available to allocate to you?

itzelmv commented 5 years ago

Hello! Thank you so much for your comments. Regarding your question, yes, it is possible for me to find and finance my accommodation. I understand there is no an avaible stipend to allocate to me so I will look for in other institutions to afford the tickets because in order to get my plane tickets from Mexico to UK, I would need help at least half of the cost of the tickets to attend the event.

Hi all! @itzelmv has reached out asking for confirmation that an interpreter will be present. Who should she contact?

ryanwarsaw commented 5 years ago

Hey @itzelmv, @acabunoc: Thank you for bringing this up to my attention, we've escalated the priority and this is currently assigned to @Btayeg, she should reach out to you soon with more information.
