What will happen in your session?

Visual longform storytelling is an emerging medium that is taking many forms, from journalistic projects such as the New York Times' groundbreaking "Snowfall" to the way "Stories" on social platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram are being used. We'll look at historical and contemporary examples of effective visual storytelling as well as their elements, and will show participants how to create their own stories a new open source tool for creating these stories called Mural (www.getmural.io).

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

After the session, participants will have a better understanding of what makes a good visual longform story, as well as how to assemble these stories effectively. Concretely, they will come away from the session with their own stories made from a combination of pre-prepared story elements as well as elements they create in the session. They will also have a better understanding of the tools needed to produce such stories, with a strong emphasis on free and open source tools.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

Participants are encouraged to bring laptops and mobile phones with cameras for working with video. Speakers for playing back sound will also be useful.

Hey @Flowdeeps and @naomiaro! Thanks for this session proposal, it sounds fun! I'm one of the Openness space wranglers and we had a quick question - how were you planning to tie this session into the MozFest Data+you theme?

muraldouglas commented 6 years ago

Hi @yochannah! Seeing as @flowdeeps and @naomiaro haven't responded quickly, I can try to give my own perspective: The multimedia stories formats being promoted by the social media platforms (Instagram Stories, Facebook Stories, Snapchat stories, etc.) are completely closed in format and are tied to those platforms. Our own approach is that if you own your multimedia stories' source code, you can use them in far more contexts and on any server of your choice. A lot of what we plan to do is to show how to not only put together a multimedia story using Mural, but also to show participants how they can go into the HTML5, CSS and JavaScript to make the stories do what you want.
