[ Submitter's Name ] Eric Braman [ Submitter's Affiliated Organisation ] Lane Arts Council

[ Other Facilitator 1's Name ] Olive DelSol

What will happen in your session?

In this session participants will get their hands on iPads to explore a variety of free and low-cost applications, all of which are used as a part of our in-school digital storytelling initiative. Teaching artist Olive DelSol will teach participants the basics of digital storytelling and provide insight on how to bring the practice of digital storytelling into a variety of classroom environments. Samples of student work will be shown as Eric Braman discusses the ways digital storytelling amplifies youth voice and supports student learning. Participants will be provided the essential tools and introductions to bring digital storytelling into their personal lives and classrooms.

What is the goal or outcome of your session?

The primary goal for this session is to spread the knowledge, awareness, and use of digital storytelling in classrooms around the globe. Participants will learn the foundational curriculum for effective digital storytelling, explore the many free and low-cost applications available to support digital storytelling, and begin crafting their own personal narratives. They will understand the value of creative making in learning environments and the ways technology can be used to teach and empower students. Finally, participants will be invited to join the international online community of digital storytellers and educators.

If your session requires additional materials or electronic equipment, please outline your needs.

We will need internet access for our tablets and would like a projector, which can project from an iPad. We can bring our own iPad adaptor, we will just need to know the type of adaptor we will need.

Time needed

60 mins

How might this session be different if more non-teaching participants show up than teaching participants?

LaneArtsCouncil commented 6 years ago

Hi @chadsansing - Thanks for asking! In the circumstance we would have non-teaching participants in the space we would focus on sharing the breadth of opportunity available in Digital Storytelling expression. It is a great tool for any youth-activating space, whether that is in the classroom, in after school programs, or for parents supporting their children's tech literacy and artistic expression. A majority of our work in Lane County, Oregon has been in classrooms, but we have also brought these tools to community centers, youth camps, adult education, and professional development conferences. Our approach to teaching these tools and the value of these tools will be fully influenced by who is present in the room and what personal excitement brings them to the session.

Hello Everyone!! It has been an amazing and busy year teaching Digital Storytelling to over 6 Eugene Area Middle and High schools! Hi there @LaneArtsCouncil , just wanted to clarify how many Tablets you would be bringing along?

OliveDelSol commented 6 years ago

Hello @Jcoopt ! We currently have 10 iPads. I can bring an additional instructor's tablet, and there may be a chance for a few more. Luckily, most of these apps are free and can be downloaded on a smartphone for as many people who brought one along and would like to join in the fun!

If you would like to check out a past Digital Storytelling livestream event, check out the following video! If you would like to cut to the chase of some of the apps I'd like to present at the Mozfest event: go to 14:27 for YouDoodle silhouette art, 32:00 for Adobe Spark Video multimedia presentations,
50:00 for Flip-a-Clip frame by frame animation application. There are other apps for music production, green screen and more that I could present as well!

The youtube link for the livestream here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIKq_KSGp7U

enjoy!
